PhotoZoom for anamorphic DVD?

OK, so suppose I shoot my upcoming short with a Mini35, which pretty much precludes 16:9 anamorphic, or at least makes it very difficult. Can PhotoZoom upscale the X and Y dimensions by different factors?

IOW could I use PhotoZoom to create an anamorphic DVD from my masked master and get at least a little enhancement from it?

Re: PhotoZoom for anamorphic DVD?

yes.. you can specify any new image size you want. you dont have to remain proportionate to the original file.

i cant speel right now.. and thus my user name rings true again :)

Re: PhotoZoom for anamorphic DVD?

That is correct. I used it to up-res anamorphic 720x480 to HD 1280 x 720. That's changing aspect ratios from a mathematical 3:2 to a mathematical 16:9. It worked just fine.

Re: PhotoZoom for anamorphic DVD?

Thanks!

Barry, do you have any uprezzed demo footage on the web, or do you know of any? I realize any web footage is going to be of limited comparative use, but I figure if it's prepared well it'll be better than nothing.

Not that it's a decision I'll have to make until post-production, but it sounds like a cool option.

Re: PhotoZoom for anamorphic DVD?

Barry,

I prefer the colors from the AG-DVX100.
The HD1 has a little more resolution.
But once bumped on HD, the DVX footage looks great and much more "filmic".

The image of the HD1 looks clean.
I heard so much bad comments from peoples about many artefacts in HD1's imagery...that i dont see on your HD1 footage though...
What is your evaluation of the HD1 ?

Re: PhotoZoom for anamorphic DVD?

The HD1 is a horrible camera, completely unusable in any sort of professional production environment.

You may not have seen artifacts in the footage I posted there, but keep in mind that was done under absolutely optimal conditions for that camera. We tweaked the living daylights out of that shot to get the HD1 to shoot the best it could. Even so, it has a very "plasticky" sheen over faces and such -- I just do not like the way it renders footage.

You want to see artifacts? Check out the edge enhancement in this shot, where the mountains meet the sky:
http://www.icexpo.com/JVCnDVX/JVC-HD-01.jpg

The camera can take gorgeous footage, and it can also turn out garbage like that shot. And you never know until you get back in the editing suite, because on the miniscule LCD you don't know what you're getting. It's totally untrustworthy.

I investigated the up-rezzing because I was jealous of how high-resolution the JVC was. I thought (like you do) that everything about the DVX picture was superior, except for the resolution, where the JVC blows it away. That's why I went investigating up-rezzing in the first place, and came away with the conclusion that up-rezzed DVX footage beats native JVC footage for overall look.

Re: PhotoZoom for anamorphic DVD?

OK,

I've tried some experiments with SSplinePro, export image sequence (BMP, about 5 min. long) from Final Cut Pro 4 and process in SSplinePro to output BMP again. It takes so much time on my dual 1 gig G4...!!!
And it crashes almost all the times when i import the uprezzed images
folder into FCP4... and when it works, it takes again so much time to render uprezzed images it is scaring...hee hee...

Do you know any faster/better way to do it ?

oh...i forgot...processing SSplinPro seems to sharpen the image even if you stay in 720X480...what do you think ? I'm not sure it is better but it is "sharper" once converted to MPEG2 DVD.

Re: PhotoZoom for anamorphic DVD?

Just looked at the mpg of the DVX vs JVC after the uprezzing. The color is MUCH better with the VDX footage, and there seems to be surprisingly little trade-off with resolution and sharpness, certainly not enough to make a difference to the average viewer. Thanks for posting this!

Re: PhotoZoom for anamorphic DVD?

Barry, I can't seem to play that clip (NewDVXvsJVC.mpg). Windows Media Player (v9) plays a couple seconds of black, and so does CyberDVD, and Quicktime says it's missing the necessary components. Do I need some kind of special codec?

Re: PhotoZoom for anamorphic DVD?

Did you download it to your system and play from there? I tried just playing it in-place and got a broken quicktime page, so I don't know what that means.

Download it and try to play it from WMP. It's a regular MPG-2 file, so it should play with just about anything...

Re: PhotoZoom for anamorphic DVD?

Yeah, I saved it to my desktop. I got a 6.89MB file, and when I open it in Windows Media Player, I get about six seconds of black screen and no sound. I have the newest version of WMP, Windows XP Pro... dunno what else I could need.
