Photoshop Technique for Video

I am not sure what would be easier....to shoot an interview in front of the green screen; shoot the interview with normal background; in post perform a 8 point garbage matte (providing the person doesnt do a lot of movement during the interview); somehow do some sort of Photoshop move to cut the background out of the shot. I was thnking about interviewing a singer and having her in the foreground then in the background have her on stage performing while she talks about performing. I guess in a way it could be like a Picture in Picture type thing but I think it would look better if it was more like a Photoshop type effect.

Now do I actually have to shoot against a green screen to use that filter? I am not sure if you have seen the show on A &E called "FIRST 48" but they do the effect I am trying to do. The have a video clip of a detective at a crime scene, then they make it a freeze frame, remove the background and replace it with another background. There is no green screen being used. Sometimes they are driving a car and they do that. So would that Chroma Key Filter work in that situation as well?

They're creating a roto matte from the sounds of it. You'll have to trace an image just like in Photoshop with the pen tool or lasso. Since it's a freeze you could bring it into Photoshop.
FCP only offers a premitive 8 point garbage matte.

I am seeing this effect more and more and I am destined to figure out how they are doing it! I can't tell if the editors of the A&E show "The First 48" are taking a still from the video and cutting the person out and replacing the background with a matte or what. I know I like the effect! So I guess I would take the freeze frame to Photoshop, cut the background out then bring the foreground part of the image back to FCP and then use the Chroma Key Filter? I was kinda lost on that part of it.

No chroma key required. If you do it in Photoshop create an alpha channel at the same time. If you use the lasso tool or make a selection in Photoshop then Save Selection to a new channel. Save the image as a Photoshop file or other format that keeps the alpha (not JPEG)
Impot into AE and just use it directly as a layer.

I forget where I got them (not in studio to check at the moment), but some time back I found a free FCP plug in download that had 4, 8, 16, 50, 80, and 100 point garbage mattes. I used them a lot. Until I finally broke down and got Shake. Now all that FX stuff is a breeze!
