I'm surprised this thread still exists.
As I recall he was banned after a quite spectacular flame war with another respected member, and after repeated warnings from the mods, all his threads were locked.
I may be mis-remembering old history, but I think that's what happened.
Hope posting this doesn't get me banned
Dave

Even stranger, a friend of Otis's who personally met him and worked with him on development, started a massive row on the ikonoskop.com forum, causing that forum to be shut down for months.

Definitely a viral effect here...

Could you imagine if the Drama came to market - there would be ... a lot of drama!!!!

Have you ever met Otis?

Nope, but I followed his posts for years and I'm sure the man has a few screws loose .
I know his type, I encountered similar people on the Internet who bragged about making from scratch revolutionary game consoles, computers, storage devices, etc.
These guys also posted for years on forums, they would make websites, they would try to collect money from sponsors, they would build unfinished prototypes, etc.
In the end all their efforts were in vain, they were just deluding themselves, they didn't have the means to produce those things.

Look at it this way: even RED can't finish their Scarlet camera after so many years, and they have plenty of money and some of the brightest people working for them.
What can a guy in a garage do?
He might be able to build a protype camera, but making a production line for building thousands of cameras it's a whole different thing.

Like I said, I would not ever expect mass production from Otis and frankly that is not necessary as he is using readily available off the shelf industrial camera hardware. Sure it is a challenge for one guy with a dream. But he could certainly build one off cameras in modest quantities, or just sell the software package and let people assemble their own. Not everything has to be aimed for the lowest common denominator mass consumer market.

Red is a whole different ball game. They started from scratch with their own custom sensor designs, custom electronics, and proprietary software to take the digital motion camera beyond HD video and film performance capabilities in all respects. Much more difficult and ambitious undertaking.

And as I said, there were lots of other guys with similar dreams who didn't accomplish anything.
Take for example the never released Indrema console: it was supposed to be a powerful gaming console made with regular off-the-shelf PC hardware and the Linux operating system.
An excelent idea in theory. Can you guess what went wrong?
There is a huge number of projects that don't get absolutely anywhere.

Nope, but I followed his posts for years and I'm sure the man has a few screws loose .

Okay, we got it - for some reason you don't like Otis.

But talking about a "screw loose" - why on earth are you searching the Internet for Otis/Drama comments for years now and and bash him as a troll in different forums and blogs?
I mean, you actually created an account just for that, here on DVXuser.

If you think the whole thing is a fake and you are not interested, why don´t you just leave it alone?

Frank

Because Otis still appears here and there and claims every time that his camera will go into production in just a few months. I just want to warn people...

Warn people? LOL To not buy a camera, that does not exist (in your opinion)?

Come on, leave it alone.

Well....I also warned people at reduser about not getting excited about the Scarlet camera, until I was banned. Some people still don't get it after so many years.

Some really important contributors to this site have been permanently banned. I really can't understand what's up with that.

One of the ways to get banned quickly is to violate the rules of the forum, which are posted here. The decision to ban a member is not taken lightly and almost always follows a direct offline dialogue with the offending party. The larger membership is sometimes surprised by a ban or other punitive action (sometimes not) because we don't air dirty laundry up-front, whenever possible. Normally, a note like this might only be sent via PM, but I think it could be valuable for there to be some transparency when such accusations are leveled against the volunteers who moderate this forum.

Keep it positive, collaborative and conducive to learning and nobody needs to disappear.

The problem with Otis is that he's just a troll or simply a nut-case. He has been posting the same stuff on many forums since 2008 under various names. He has no means to make such a camera.

For a member with 6 posts (most or all in this thread) and who has only been a member since... this month, I assume you were reading his posts in the past? Or are you speaking from inexperience? Even if you are a very informed person, I'd say that entering a forum with post #1 calling a former member a troll, might be putting the wrong foot forward.

As for fullfilling promises... the RedOne, was at one point just an idea. So was the airplane and lightbulb. Everything starts from nothing, so the outcome of Otis completing his camera, is really a matter of fate, determination and time. Just because it doesn't exist now, doesn't mean it never will. But yes, it is a difficult undertaking and the possibility of non-completion always lingers. I wish Otis god-speed in his endeavor.

As far as I know, he has not been soliciting prepayment from DVXuser members, so I don't know what is to be warned.
