Congrats Otis! Not many turn talk into reality and you have done it!

One thing: I see a fan on the side correct? Isnt that going to create a problem with noise?

Great to see those prototype pictures at last. I actually like the simple design, reminds me of the Bolex I once owned: understated, solid, ran like a Swiss watch -- and a uniquely affordable way into 16mm filming in those days.

Yep, actually wouldnt it be pretty if it could have some of the exterior aesthetic features of an older film cam, hehe!

Something that could let this product stand out in an affectionate quarter for indy filmmakers (aesthetics wise) is something venerable rather than gadgety?

Its a small thing really, the importance is the technology and effectiveness of that, but still - would be pretty :P

I just noticed the attached image - yes imagine how remarkable it would be to have a product option like that. On an aesthetic level it would inspire cinema/film connotations which most of all would be appreciated by actual filmmakers - particularly indy filmmakers. It also allows the product to stand out in comparison to other video cameras. So definately worth a little exploration I think.

Nice render postmaster

Even on the off topic section, it lasted on reduser for about 16hours before getting locked, which is a record if you ask me:) It even survived USA business hours for a while.

I like how the mod locked the thread with the comment "this is a good thread for dvxuser."

If anything, wouldn't an uncompressed large sensor camera be more fitting of a forum dedicated to uncompressed large sensor cameras? What's that? You have a working prototype? Maybe that's why it's not appropriate for Reduser ;)

Seriously though, like the pics, excited for the future of the project, and I'm glad you choose to share it here, because this is where I read :)

Fact of the matter is...RedUser is for the discussion of the RED cameras. When I want to read about 7Ds or AF-100s or GH2s, I read here. When I want to read about RED, I read there. Easy enough.

Other cameras get talked about some, but usually only in relation to RED (i.e. the recent Alexa threads comparing/contrasting/discussing the two).

That, and the fact that Otis is posting here - meaning that no-one can really ask a question on RedUser to the man building the camera - makes it a bit pointless. And half the posts already start with "He says..." or "According to him..." It would, indeed, be better off to discuss it right here on DVXuser. I don't think there's any malice intended.

Once again, congratulations on your achievement, Otis. I'm sure it has been a great experience to pick up and shoot with your labor of many many hours!

DVXuser is more appropriate in general for discussions and comparisons of different brands of cameras. Any manufacturer's forum is primarily intended for support and discussion of their products.
The "other cameras" section at Reduser was generating a lot of noise that really had little to do with their products or issues, so they curtailed it.
Announcements of new products and cameras are welcome, just not lengthy discussions that more belong here or on another manufaturer's forum.

We hopefully did get Otis some well deserved attention by posting there though. His camera should have decent boutique market potential at least in Europe and is a nice well thought out addition to the mix.

Digital cinema cameras need a fan because they are high power designs. Drama is very low noise for its category. A large fan allows very low RPM for a CFM target, which results in far lower noise and far lower noise spectrum in frequency. Both help performance with mics. The large fan also allows very high RPM and CFM when appropriate and when the noise penalty is not a problem, for operation beyond the basic range, in extremely hot environments.

On the other hand, a small fan will make a camera sound like a server and it will also make customisation for additional air flow harder.

The point is:

If we want to see Otis to succeed (I want! :-) any help is welcome.

reduser.net is a good vitrine, Jim had seen it, posting here:

http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=48330

...but didn't touch on the Drama's thread. Martin Weiss did it the morning after.

I believe Jim wouldn't do it 'cause he is an intelligent business man, he knows very well it would be quite pointless to do it without an apparent reason at all. Line skipping? Pixel binning? Otis' project is bulletproof.

Thanx Otis,

I agree on the fan size and there are good silent ones but I think the fan itself is not going to make many people happy.....even Arri and other film cameras have blimped versions because of the noise issue....I know the REDone has a fan as well and gets some slack because of this....in the end I imagine other cooling options will win.

LMAO, some guy in his basement delivers before scarlet. WOW, NOW THATS FUNNY!! ROTF.

Not delivered yet, just a prototype. Otis is obviously not just some guy in his basement either. He is a highly skilled and capable engineer.
Off the shelf parts or not, building an extremely robust, reliable digital cinema camera with excellent image quality that is truly practical for day in day out use is not a simple task. He has been working on his camera a year longer than Red has been in development on their new modular systems.
