Not sure why, but the photos in my timeline upon exporting look like yesterday's garbage. Must be a brain freeze on my part but what gives?

They're full resolution from a D200 Nikon being mixed in with a 720 x 480 project.

What's up mench.

-Yeah I've done it before- mixed photos and video.

-Apple TV.

-Awful. Pixelated and bad.

Here's exactly what I am doing. I'm bringing in jpg's (3872 x 2592) to a timeline of digibeta footage @ 720 x 480. 29.97fps.

so anyway, I figured out a way to export straight to compressor that looks fine for Apple TV.

But I'm still a little confused on exporting an uncompressed master to make various version from there (need to deliver in multiple formats .mov, .flv, etc)

What I think happened is that when I brought in the 720x480 footage it made the timeline native to that resolution, and then when i brought the photos in it shrunk them to that default size. possible?

Because if I double click on the photos in the browser their %100 size is gigantic but if I double click on that same photo in the timeline it's now tiny and fits in the viewer.

thanks.

300.

If you have photoshop, I would create a new document using the NTSC DV preset and bring the photo into that. FCP doesn't scale stills very well in my experience.

FCP doesnt handle 300 DPI very well

I usually drop the DPI to 72 and work on a canvas at least 2x my format

ex: SD i do 1440x960

This usually allows for enough resolution to work with

That's exactly what's happening. If you are working in an SD timeline nothing can exist at higher than SD resolution in that timeline. You initial image is getting down-sampled into 720x480.

There is a limit to the size for pictures, but I do this all the time and my pics are stunningly clear. Let me clarify that I have witched from using SD NTSC to 10bit 4:2:2 uncompressed for sequneces wih picts. Its slower but the final results are so much better. Also I have switched to making them progressive. The DV codec just sucks for picts. I shoot with a D200 all the time and bring them in at 1440x960 or bigger if needed with no problem, It depends if you want to travel across the picture or do a Ken Burns zoom effect. I have gotten away from the zoom as much as possible and this helps with aliasing. The 1% gaussian blur helps so try it and see if you like the effect. Chris and Trish Myere's books go into working with video and stills and how to properly handle them.
