photographing "heat"

how does one photograph heat/vapors/ smoke rising from the wood on a board-walk.
i doubt it will get hot enough for it to happen naturally. any ideas?

Flame rods or flame forks are the common answer to this. Just below the bottom edge of the frame and a few feet forward of the camera postition for best effect.

all you have to do is put a hot plate or camping stove in front of the lens. the heat rising will distort the image in the fashion you seek. you will have to pay with distance depending on the lens you use. and of course, don't put it too close to the lens.
