Photographic "shooting ratio"

Took some portraits yesterday with my family in and around Palo Duro Canyon. 68 exposures and I'm pleased with maybe less than half of them and out of those many are different takes of the same shots. Of course, the family is glad to have any pictures, but clearly some are better than others.

What's your ratio of like/dislike on family pictures?

Interesting question.

I find it to be slim. Seems like most people hang onto EVERY SINGLE phot even though it is crap; overexposed, underexposed, weird looks on peoples faces, bad framing, blurry, etc...

I tend to discard these and keep only the nice ones. This way the photo album always looks good. I think 5 or 10 from a roll; maybe.

They say the difference between a good photographer and a bad photographer is the amount that they shoot. Pro's shoot far more, to get a few good shots.

Or so I hear, though I generally go along with it.

I still shoot film (yes, the dark ages pookie) because I enjoy the proccess of developing my own rolls and enlarging my own prints. Plus I'm waiting for full frame sensors on DSLR's to come down in price.

I think John's figure is about the same ratio as me.

2 parts fixer, 1 part developer. You'll be soaring for the rest of the evening.

EDIT: DISCLAIMER: Don't really do that; and keep your dark room well ventilated.

I just keep on clicking because you can't always go back and reshoot something. Then I weed through them later. I probably get a keeper 1/4 shots. Many are the exact same shot just different exposure bracketing, focus, etc.... So it comes down to picking which i like best (always hard to do).
