Photoflex softboxes

I quite like Photoflex boxes. I own softboxes by Photoflex, Westcott, and Chimera and they all suit my needs. The Photoflex boxes seem to be a tad heavier than the others but in terms of build and such, they're definitely good quality.

Just a warning, one thing to watch out for when putting any softbox on a DP or Omni - you may encounter an issue with the light's tilting mechanism. The older the light, the more prone to unwanted tilting it will be. You can try tightening certain nuts here and there but it won't always work. The workaround is a $44 accessory that mounts directly to the speed ring which takes all of the weight off of the light.

Anyway, Photoflex boxes are very nice. You'll be pleased. In terms of size, the medium Silverdome (24"x32") is the smallest you can use with the 1k DP. Smaller sizes seem to have maximum ratings of 500w (OK for the Omni).

Good luck.

Awesome thanks! Can you give me a link to the accessory you're talking about? Or what it is? A specialized speed ring of sorts?

Lowel lights are fantastic lights but they do NOT generally work well with softboxes. I purchased the softboxes you describe and promptly returned it as the tightening mechanism (that doesn't work the same way Arri's does) is not able to hold up the light with softbox in place.

Are you referring to the large hex nut on the DP light? I've tightened it before and I assume it could hold it since the lights are new, but you're probably right. I guess thats why they have the Rifa then eh?

I already have a Rifa ex66 (750w) and that is a pretty penny, plus the egg crate which is ridiculously priced. I was just drawn to the cheap price of the Photoflex. Are there other options? Maybe invest in some silk with frames?

The adapter I linked (and other kinds that are available) solves the tilting problem.

You will need a light stand, of course. You don't need a C-Stand for the sort I linked, just a standard 2.5" grip head which would mount on a normal lightstand.
