phone voice

Hello. Don't know if this post belongs in the audio section or here. Anyhow, does anyone know what's the best way to get a phone voice effect? I already tried recording my subject talking through an actual phone but it didn't come out right. Maybe I need a better mic? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A. this is pretty easy to do in post.
B. buy an adaptor from radio shack for $30(you can get them for old skool phones and for cell phones), and it will sound awesome and take even less time.

Telephones have a very limited frequency bandwidth--something on the order of 3000Hz. You can try using cutoff filters to roll off everything below 400Hz and above 3400Hz. That should get you close.

Hmm. I'll try it. Thanks Barry.

Good link, Angrius. Ken Stone always has great stuff for FCP.

May not be what you're looking for, but sometimes in news, if we need a phone voice or just an interview over the phone, we just tape a lav to the handset speaker. If you have enough phones at your location, you could just have 2 people on 2 different phones and a mic on the third. Just hit any key to get rid of the dialtone and you're golden.
