phone line tool - line level output?

Hey guys. I have no idea what this tool is called. Infact I've never seen one, but I'm sure they exist.

I'm trying to find something that I can hook up in series to a phone line that will put out a line level signal for recording. Maybe even a mic-level input (so I have the flexibility of plugging a working headset. Does all of this make sense? If anyone knows what this would be called or where I could find them, shoot me a reply! I appreciate it. Thanks guys!

My roommate in college cracked open a 1980s style desk phone and wired a minijack output so that he could record phone conversations (or play the stereo through the phone line). Could make a good DIY project.

When I shoot Sports down at the Linc or 76ers Basketball and I need to be live down there, I use a cable that is a phone jack on one end and a XLR on the other. I get my "IFB" so I can hear programming back in the studio by using those cables. I am not sure if this is what your asking...

What a coincidence! I made one of these back in 1990, and I still use it today.

Unless they changed something in today's phones, you don't need to attenuate the input/output wires on the handset to use "line level" signals. Make sure you use shielded wire though, otherwise it has all kinds of interference noise.
