Phone call asking for work - and how not to get a job.

I dont get young kids like that phoning, but i do get guys who want to find out how to get into the industry. if i tell them i would be creating more competition. so i always say go study first.

I always try to help someone out when they are young or just learning, but I warn them I will be brutally honest as well. Don't have time for hand holding. I do give the kid credit for reaching out, though the time of the call would have put me off too.

It is very hard when you are just getting started (unless youre lucky enough to have a connection/"in"). You need one person, just one, at that point to give some direction at the very least so youre not simply floundering around without a clue. Someone has tell you to volunteer on low budget projects or point you toward UPMs and production coordinators etc. who can hire you as a PA and get you on a legit set or to network with everyone you meet (within reason) and check in with producers etc. in town once a month to see if anythings going on you could work on...all those little tips that keep you from flying blind and getting nowhere. I was lucky enough to find someone like that, so hopefully this guy does too. You cant really be outraged at getting those kinds of calls. We were all scared little ducklings once with no idea how to leave the nest. Or lake. Or lake nest. Goddamnit i work in video production not the duck expert brigade.
