Phantom 5 leak...

Well... some of you may already have seen the leaked hand drawings detailing a lot of the upcomming Phantom 5. Now a photo has been leaked, supposedly of the Phantom 5 drone.

More or less is only confirms one thing and affirms another.

- It looks like the P5 will indeed have interchangable lenses.
- Unfortunately it looks like it wont sport retractable legs.

To me this doesn't look faked. He even went as far as to photoshop his car in the background to hide significant parts of it that could identify him as a drone tester.

Interchangeable lenses would be nice but not essential in a consumer drone. I think most of us consumer drone users want:

1. Longer flight times
2. Larger imager with better data rates and codecs with more dynamic range and less noise
3. Quieter Operation
4. Water resistant (I fly a lot over the ocean) and sooner or later, I will lose my Mavic Pro in the sea. It would be nice and I would pay a minimum of 20-30% more for the same exact drone that could fall into the sea, be retrieved and dried off and get back in the air.
5. Better, simpler and more reliable software updates from DJI. Also, randomly making you sign on to your DJI account whenever the app makes up it's mind that it wants you to and you are using an iPad or Crystal Sky, in the boondocks with no Internet can ruin your entire shoot. Same with last years overheating issue, I couldn't fly for months 'till DJI updated the firmware and software.
6. Fewer toys in the app. It's good enough where it is, stop making new smart modes, dumb functions that perhaps 1% of users care about or will use. Make the software simpler, more intuitive and reliable and kill the feature bloat

I have not personally used a changeable lens drone so I see limited need for a 50 or 75mm FOV from the air but maybe I am in the minority?

Phantom isnt consumer drone anymore... thats why the mavic exists. The P4P is an entry level professionel drone. Very very usable on corporate shoots... if you head straight into selling an inspire or other two manned operation as a default to corporate clients you are selling the product too expensive :) imo ofc.

I'd love a couple of lens choices for the P series. Its too wide as is. I bet your request for flight time will be honoured as well. I hope the weather proofing is also a subject they will improve.

Over here, the Insp. 2 setup for dual operation is 5 times that of a P4P setup... very few clients will understand that and you'd hard pressed to even tripple or double the fee because you tossed money at the insp than the P4.

I guess different markets? I'm in LA and work in Hollywood where a Phantom drone is most definitely regarded as a consumer drone. Even the inspire used to be regarded as a high end consumer drone before the new camera, now it's sort of regarded as high end prosumer. Pro drones here mean something with eight blades, custom, that costs $30k to $50k and can carry a RED or an Alexa Mini.

I would say anything you can walk into Best Buy and purchase and walk out with is consumer level. It doesn't matter where or how many times they put 'Pro' in the name.

Phantom 4 Pro, even Mavic and Mavic air can be used in professional scenarios. Say commercials, broadcast, etc. Not for high end filmmaking, but definitely indie if aware of its limitations. Phantom 5 looks like an amazing drone. Love the Phantoms for their manoeuvrability , speed and ease of carry and use. Didn't get the Phantom 4 Pro (but used and rented one often) and am looking to purchase this one.

Agree... Although I did mention that over here, someone was quick to say "oh... but we've had such great service!" But then again, I haven't had the need for support yet. But their software engineering was dodgy to begin with. I had the none + controller to begin with and hooking that up with a phone with the app was down right aggrevating. The + controller didn't give me any issues.

Their file formats are weird as well though. Don't know what it is, but Resolve really don't like DJI files from the P4. But those are technical stuff.
I'm pretty happy with the footage, and so have my clients been so far. :)

The Phantoms are great drones, agreed, I just don't think interchangeable lenses should be a priority for DJI when consumers want and need other things like higher bit rates and data rates in better codecs and decent customer support a lot more. I've dealt with DJI support and it's a joke, they take a week to three weeks to respond and when they do, it's typically, "Check our discussion boards". Terrible.

I notice this with most camera manufacturers too, they give us a bunch of feature bloat that we really don't need and they ignore the practical, needed features that we want to get actual work done.

I love my Mavic Pro. But couldn't agree more, it's nowhere near a pro drone. It's a nice little consumer drone that Costco now has pallets of at $899.00 sitting next to sunglasses and wireless speakers.

Interchangeable lenses is a huge deal for smaller drones. The look of a 50 flying through the air all of a sudden changes from a "drone" shot to a "cineflex" shot. Big difference in look. Finally as far as "pro" is concerned, unless the budget of the project requires to be flying the exact same lens package for look like anamorphics, the inspire 2 with the newer camera packages would be my choice every time. Infinitely easier, less complications, way, way more flying capabilities than a bigger drone (faster in all directions including descent), and the image quality is damn, damn good now and I've been on set with all variations of drones.

Yep. Just because someone may use the footage from one of these, doesn't make the drone a professional piece of gear. I hope others realize that we're talking about more than just image quality when we talk about professional equipment. iPhone footage is shown on TV everyday, but that doesn't make it a professional level camera.

Just as: just because you choose to fly a matrice with a red attached doesnt make your footage look pro automatically.

Put a af100 in the hands of Deakins and he'd still make it look good.

Most of my drone experience up to recently has been 8 blades with a dedicated pilot and me working the camera.

However a couple months ago I purchased a Phantom 4 Pro hoping it might be a viable low cost solution to a recent problem. Those of you who do automotive commercials might be aware, some auto manufactures are no longer shooting running footage of their vehicles. Leaving a huge hole where easily obtainable footage was once the norm. I have to say, the Phantom 4 Pro performed much better than I expected for such a low cost option. I shot both day and night footage for CDJR, Toyota, and Kia dealerships as my initial test. And the only negative feedback from the first edit of the spots were "they look too much like national spots". After localizing them a little better, they are all airing and everyone is happy.

Sorry if I come off sounding like a DJI salesman, but I'm really interested to see what they come up with next.

Longer fly time is on the top of my list.

I also think it would be cool if they added motorized polarizer filter rotation.

The P4P has an 8.8mm lens which DJI says is equivalent to 24mm, so assuming a similar size sensor is in this P5, that'd make the 50 in the leaked pic equivalent to 135. Obviously too long, and I doubt they'd mark their lenses with "equivalent to" numbers. Makes me think this is fake.

Unless they use the same sensor size as in the X7, just toned down so it doesn't eat it up. Even if they made an APS-C sensor a 50mm would be ok.

Dave - I've had pretty much a similar experience as yours. Used to hire Inspire 1 or other pilot and then run camera controls. But about a year ago, took the plunge on getting my 107 and then first the Mavic Pro (returned) and then the P4Pro...
The h.265 100Mbps 4k footage I'm getting with the P4Pro certainly rivals what I was getting before with more expensive drones and is a really nice step up from the MP.
Actually enjoyed flying the MP (and like that it was quieter) but image-wise no comparison really.
+1 on the motorized polarizer filter. And I also wish the DJI forum was better

The Phantom 5 will not have a super-35 sensor. I'd be flabbergasted if it has a Micro-4/3 sensor. It would have to upsize the entire drone significantly to get any bigger than the 1" sensor they've been using in the P4Pro and P4Adv.
