Petrol Bag Source

Hi All,

I've been bargain shopping again, and picked up a couple of great finds. I picked up a Countryman B6 for $120, and a SD 302 for $900 and both work great! ;-)

Now I need to pick up a Petrol bag (one size up from the one Matt is using). I am abosolutely going to buy this one new, and was wondering if anyone can suggest the best price source for these. Matt, have you negotiated a "DV" discount with anyone else for us??? ;-)

Thanks!

Phil

No... but where in the hell did you get the B6 for $120 and a 302 for $900?!

Holy Sh... moley. Even if those items were used, but in good shape you STILL came out smelling like a rose!

I got my Petrol from Trew... I think the current lowest Petrol pricing is at B&H or Adorama... but like I said... mine came from Trew Audio.

At the risk of revealing my secret stash of good sources...

The B6 came from Colossal Sound in L.A. They have a couple of COS11's and a bunch of other stuff right now.

Wierd story about the B6, but shows how honest Colossal is...

When I went to buy it, we negotiated $175 (still a great price) with all the accessories. Well, they discovered that they had none of the accessories, so they called and offered to either cancel the order or reduce the price. Well, since Countryman is about 10 minutes away, I went for the B6 as is. I still have to get it rewired for the G2, so my total cost for just the mic will be $150. I'll probably buy the caps and case for it too, just to have everything intact.

BTW, I decided to go all Countryman for my lav's (yes, I know, no surprise, I'm always hyping them). I had considered adding a COS11, but I know that sooner or later I will go Lectro for my wireless, and given that Countryman is so convenient for re-wiring, I figured I would still with them. So I will have 3 B6's, an EMW and four G2's as my wireless kit (for now).

Matt, another question for you. I'm wondering about the over the head harness for the Petrol. I'm pretty round in the middle, does it expand to handle us "big guys"? Or should I go with the lower cost over the shoulders only model? (Having a big gut does have one advantage to bag work, puts everything on a better angle. ;-)

Hmm... a loaded question. Well I'm 6' and 210 lbs... I guess I could stand to lose a few, but I appear to be in okay shape... I got the harness for about a hundred bucks... and I absolutely LOVE it... it's adjustable too.

If I just have to grab a couple lines from several different people then I may not use the harness... but if you've got to boom for a while then it's a blessing.

There were other guys on this board that really pushed me to get the harness... like Dave Fisk I think... and a couple others... and they were all right on the money... the harness is WELL worth the cost! It's very nice and completely removes the physical burden of carring the gear... you won't forget you have a mixer/recorder on your belly... but it won't ever bother you either.

I shouldn't even mention this part... but it's also the ultimate cred. On this one shoot I was doing sound wirelessly while another guy was running my DVX... (drop a G2 onto the recorder or mixer out and you got wireless audio that will probably suffice and you've got perfection going into the digital recorder simultaneously... it's great) and anyway... we were barging into EVERYTHING... we got right on stage with people as if we were all doing a Vaudville act! Nobody EVER questioned ANYTHING... just him running right up into people's faces with my cam and me constantly at his side with the boom mic hovering over everybody... at the end of the day when I could finally relax I laughed my ASS off... we were barging in front of giant newscrew cams and crap... I mean we'd go RIGHT to the front of the action... and nobody EVER said sh*t to us... at one point a guy actually did say, "wow you guys are serious... so far you're the only one with a sound guy"... meanwhile the other cams were $50K shoulder mounts.

Sorry... relaying what is probably funnier to me then it will be to anybody else. Anyway... yeah... I love that harness.

Okay, so I just got back from Countryman and I am loving them even more!!!

I brought in my new/used B6, so they could check it out and re-plug it. I also bought one of their little zipper pouches for it.

Well, they threw in the caps and clips and wind cover for it without me even asking. And they even managed to read the serial number off the tiny sticker on the wire and put it in the front of the pouch.

All of this was done in 10 minutes, while I waited.

I rank Countryman up there with Sound Devices when it comes to product quality and customer service!
