Hi,
A lot of people have been wondering about the elusive Petroff matte box. I found a place here in Toronto who rents them out and rented one this weekend for this music video that I'm D.P'ing. Thought I would post some pics so people could take a closer look. I have the matte box and both .7 and .6 Century lenses until Sunday so if anyone wants me to do some additional tests or take some additional pics I can try to do so Sunday night. This is the 4x5 model. Petroff also makes a 4x4 and 5x5 model.
The back opening on the 4x5 model is 110mm. Large enough to take both the .7 and .6 Century lenses. I ran some tests with Mike Wilder at Image Gear where I rented it from and we found that we could get away with 2 stages with the .6 but only 1 stage with the .7 before it started vignetting ever so slightly (THIS IS WITH THE DVX FULLY WIDE)...you can slide the box further back with the .6 lens so that's how we got away with 2 stages..I'm going to do some more experimenting with the .7 to see if I can get it to work...although just zooming in a bit gets rid of it...did not test with monitor with underscan.
Filter holder. Made from plastic...has a pulling slide lock by the handle to hold the filter like most filter holders. Takes 4x5.65 and 4x4 filters.
Lens shade can be removed from filter stage compartment. Fully modular design. If anything should break it would make it easier (and hopefully cheaper) to replace.
Rod mount. Small up and down adjustments can be made to center the box with your lens.
Complete with side wings an top flag. Wings and top flag expand on a sliding sort of system..they don't have nice knobs though like the Chrosziel...They feel a little "tin-ny" but I have nothing to compare it to as I've never handled Chrosziels ones.
This particular rental has 2 stages. All stages are rotatable. I've heard of someone having as many as 5 stages. Fully configurable.
Everything together on my new DVX100A. ;D
