Pete's Dragon

Wow....
I just lead a Bible study based around Disney's Pete's Dragon.
From all my research, the movie is just a movie, but it's packed with parallels to Christianity and the search for truth.

Like I said, it's not intentional but almost every character can be compared to an archetype of someone in our society.

There was the savior figure, the doubting character, the "good person" character, the "sinful drunkard", the evil organized religion character....

I presented this to a group of about 50 college kids, and I really felt like they'd be offended and uninterested that I was showing them a freakin Disney movie on a Saturday night, and afterwards I was kinda like "Well that's it..." but they were really interested in having a lively discussion about it. It was really cool. Film talks!

(this is not meant to be a 'religious post'. I was just really struck by the power that film has, and the way it causes people to interact. It was a LONG, OLD, MUSICAL with outdated special effects, and it didn't finish til around 1 AM, and they still WANTED to have a discussion about it. I was touched and inspired!)

uhm, I actually went to see that movie in the theater when it came out.  *sigh*  I loved it.  My mom took me and my little brother to see it.  I never thought about the correlation of which you speak, though.  I'd be interested in reading any notes you have on your class, though. Seriously.  Do you have any you can e-mail me?  PM me...

That's a pretty cool observation. I remember seeing that movie as a kid, decided to get it of NetFlix for my kids! :)

Re: Pete's Dragon

Aren't there many websites dedicated to this very thing? I just read an article in Time magazine that revealed there are many churches now using film to teach the bible in an attempt to bring in the younger generation. I stumbled upon a site in the past that showed the references from the bible in E.T. I did find it odd that in the next issue of Time in the readers letters section, many churchgoers wrote in to show their dislike for this method. They seemed to believe the only tool used should be the bible itself. Anyway, I'm glad your study went well, and now I gotta go rent Pete's Dragon. I haven't seen it in years :/

Yeah guys...as a filmmaker, i'm personally really excited about this "movement"

that's a link to a book I've been eyeing for some time now. I'll let you know how it is! And trust me, Pete's Dragon will NEVER be the same. It's hard to believe that none of the parallels in the film are intentional. But like I said, I can't find any reviewer or critical evidence to support the theory.

Re: Pete's Dragon

You pick things up in many movies. In our local Christian Bookstore there is even a devotional that uses the Lord of the Rings and the Bible for daily devotionals. I looked through it and yeah, there is so much that is parallel.

That is how Jesus Taught, was with parables and stories. Movies and film are todays parables.

Yeah, but the thing about LOTR is that the Christian parallels are actually legitimate, not just drawn out by the viewer because of his/her own beliefs. :)

You can relate everything to Jesus. Just like you can relate everything to Buddha. You could relate Jesus to Buddha. In fact, i think there are some classes on that.
