Performance issue

I have a new Macbook Pro (2g ram) and I'm editing a short instructional video for a piece of aquarium equipment. It's extremely simple- about 6 clips and 8 pages of text, no audio. I used Boris Title 3d for the text. There's been a huge slowdown and I'm not sure if it's because of the text or the firewire drive. Prior to installing the fw drive, on a different (also small) project, I used the laptop hd as the scratch drive and I had no slowdown issues for simple stuff like straight cuts and cross dissolves. This sequence is 3 minutes long and rendering takes almost 3 minutes- that's too long right? Without the Boris, and with no fw drive rendering would've taken a matter of a few seconds. I have to wait every time I change anything now- simple trims, dissolve time adjustments... it's terrible. How can I fix this performance issue? Thanks for your help!

If you have to render simple trims and dissolves, it's not the FW drive. Download MacJanitor and run it, run FCP Rescue to trash your prefs, run Disk Utility on all drives.

Do you really need 3D text, or are you doing simple plain text in Boris?

Thanks for the help. No, I could've easily used plain text but it's all done now... didn't know the 3d would cause such a huge problem.
This is practically a brand new computer- I'll run those utilities you mentioned (already tried trashing FCP prefs) and see if it runs any better. If it doesn't I'm gonna return it because the salesperson at the Mac store said I would be able to run FCP "no problem". Is it just the 3D stuff I can't do?

I'm not exactly sure I know what you're doing, as I'm not there, but, 3D text will take just a tiny tad longer to render than using the regular text generator.

I don't think it's the computer, I think it's your configuration. You should have to render anything but text in the sort of edit you're doing. But, without more details, I can only guess.
