Pentium D for AVCHD?

So I've found quite a few really inexpensive Pentium Ds, which would support my AVCHD (at 17mbps, not 24 -- but still). I've heard that they're good for editing video but not much else.

Anyone have any experience with this model processor?

Pentium ds are really old. The highest model on the pentium d was 3.6ghz which was the pentium d 960. this processor is slow compared to the slowest core2duo today. it also ran really hot. its the first gen of the dual core processors which you want to stay away from. especially if your trying to edit avchd. how much are you willing to spend on a processor. i would try to save up just a little more and get atleast something like this

this is just a quick search of a pentium d 960 compared to the old e6600 and the e6600 has been discontinued for a while now.

Even if a Pentium D were free, I'd still consider it expensive nowadays (when looking at horsepower for total system cost). The cost of building a computer includes many things (motherboard, memory, power supply, etc. - to name a few). You can get dual core Athlons for under $50 bucks, pretty easily nowadays. Even those perform significantly better than a Pentium D. Take a look at the total cost of building a computer, and even just spending $50 for a CPU would get you significantly more horsepower than a free Pentium D would, while total system cost would only be very slightly higher. You can also get used quad core CPUS for well under $100 nowadays (original Phenoms, like the 9600, are commonly selling used for something like $70-80 on eBay, and those will absolutely blow away a Pentium D).
