Pelican Cases

I am new to the group and just want to say hello to everyone :).

Does anyone have a photo of their Pelican 1550 or 1600 foam setup? I just want to see how others have their case set up.

Do you think 1550 is too small for

  • DVX100a with lens hood and eye cup attached
    3~4 batteries
    AC adapter
    cables(AC and DC cables)
    remote control
    3 tapes
    Varizoom stealth controller
    microphone holder

Should I go for 1600 or 1550 big enough?

The DVX100a itself is 5 1/2" deep and 1550, according to Pelican website,  is only 8-9/16" thick. That is about 1.5 inches of foam on the top and on the bottom, Is it enough protection?  Do I need to take off the eye cup and microphone holder everytime I put it in 1550? ???

I broke my last camcorder(TRV900) during a motorcycle trip in Northern India. I am planning another motorcycle trip in India this fall and it is going to be much longer and dangerous this time. I don't want to break DVX100A. I want safety, but I also don't want a huge/heavy case either.

Thanks in advance,
Chi

Re: Pelican Cases

I have the Kata case that is normally used to carry the DVX100a and I purchased the pelican 1550... I am going to Maine in July... is the 1550 too big for carry on or what you do you use to travel when carrying the dvx 100a and accessories?

Re: Pelican Cases

Dave,
I don't own the Pelican 1550 yet, but this is what I know.

according to most airline companies, the carry on item should not exceed 45~47 linear inches (length + width + height). Check out http://www.moriluggage.com/aircarryon.asp

Pelican 1550 is 20-11/16" x 17-3/16" x 8-9/16", that is about 46.6 linear inches, just a little bit bigger than the regulation size.

I think it might be okay for international flights(because the overhead compartments are bigger on international flights), but not ok for domestic flights(smaller planes have smaller compartments).

But I don't own 1550 yet, so don't believe what I say. I would like to hear from people who actually own one too.

Re: Pelican Cases

I have a 1520 Pelican case. I have cutouts for the camera; 1 cutout to hold 2 batteries; another cutout to hold 1 battery; another cutout where I place my AC adapter cables and a 4th battery; another cutout that holds 3 tapes; one that holds the charger; and last a very slim cutout to hold the remote control. I place my Kata rain coat and shoulder strap over everything then shut the case and lock it up with a Pelican lock! I will try to provide pictures soon. Oh yea I had to cut my foam all the way down to the second layer of foam for the camera to fit down in there snug. I used the 2nd layer as cushion...there's not much but its some!

The 1520 fit with plenty of room in the over head compartment on the Southwest plane I was on going to and from Florida last month.
