Pelican 1520 Foam...

I just got my new Pelican case from B&H. I asked for the case with the pick and pluck foam. What I got was a large chunk of foam with a thin layer of another thing of foam on the bottom. Now when I was deciding which case to get, I got a bunch of responses from people that said you can just pull up the chunks of foam to fit my camera and other stuff. They also went on to say that I would not need a knife to cut the foam. Well, unless B&H messed up my order, I am going to have to take a knife to it because like I said the foam is one thick chunk. There is nothing loose about it in terms of pulling the "pre-cut" foam parts out.

Is this normal or should I call B&H and complain?

Re: Pelican 1520 Foam...

you should see little smaller than 1" chunks.. like its scored. I think you picked the wrong foam.

Re: Pelican 1520 Foam...

Naw B&H sent me the wrong one because I told them I needed it for my DVX100 so I will have to call them back and settle this. Thanks for response Jarred.

Re: Pelican 1520 Foam...

Pick 'n' Pluck foam does come in one big hunk. But it's scored for 1/2" squares all across it, so you can rip out the chunks you don't need, in 1/2" (I think) sizes. Double-check what you've got, look close and see if there's a grid pattern on it, that grid should represent where you can pull chunks out of it.

Re: Pelican 1520 Foam...

If you GENTLY pull at the foam, the die cuts will be evident. They are very tight and nearly invisible, so as to make the ones you don't remove stay firmly together.

Re: Pelican 1520 Foam...

After a quick call to B&H they explained to me that, that was the case. I had to bend the foam in a way to see the pre cuts. So I am good now BUT how low am I supposed to remove the foam down too? I have already messed up in a small section and went all the way through so there is a hole there now. I have taken about 2 and 1/2 inches out ( I keep measuring it) for the majority of the camera body. It fits in the foam nice however I cannot shut the case. So my foam is 4 inches thick. By the looks of it I am going to have to cut it down to about 3 inches so I can get the case closed.

Re: Pelican 1520 Foam...

I'm not so sure that going all the way through is such a bad idea. There is a foam layer under the die-cut block...right? If you cannot close the lid, going through the entire depth of the die-cut foam is probably the best thing to do.

I normally mark inflection points of my cutout pattern with toothpicks, and then remove the section as one large block. You could then cut that down to depth and replace, if the whole block proves to be too deep.

Re: Pelican 1520 Foam...

thanks...That is what I will probably have to do, cut it down pretty low and yes, I do have that second layer of foam on the bottom.

Re: Pelican 1520 Foam...

I have the 1600 it has 4 layers of foam one layer in the lid that looks like egg crate then in the bottom part there are two layers of pick and pluck then a fourth layer of regular foam. To make my dvx fit I had to go thru both layers of pic and pluck foam. By the way did you check out the DVX100 Pelican case patteren that was posted by Oz 8)

Re: Pelican 1520 Foam...

Finally! I got my case to finally close with the camera inside! I had to cut a big hole in the big block of pick and pluck foam the size of the camera. I then put the camera in there and it fit nice and snug and I was able to closed the lid! I did see where I could replace some foam from around where the handle is. What is a good glue to use with foam so I can just a small section of foam back?

Thanks

Re: Pelican 1520 Foam...

Spray Adhesive from home depot works well, as does double sided sticky tape that you use for sewing, and sewing glue. Just dont use anything to harsh as it will melt the foam.
