Pelican 1510 vs 1550

Just saw the 2 side by side and the 1550 is slightly larger than the 1510. I've not used them yet. And haven't gotten one. But was wondering if people who have one or the other or both - find one to be better than the other? Is the rollers really that helpful on the 1510? And can the 1550 get by on airplanes?

Re: Pelican 1510 vs 1550

I have a 1600 and a 1550, both with custom hard foam. The are bulletproof! Instead of a larger one, I opted for two smaller ones; one for my glassware (lenses and filters) and one for mattebox, mic, mixer ,etc.
BTW - it is suggested that you get the gray ones, the black ones suck up the heat something fierce.

Re: Pelican 1510 vs 1550

thanks for the input but i'm mainly trying to find users of 1510 or 1550 cases. I need the option to be able to travel with camera without having to check it in. The 1510 and 1550 seem quite similar and both come with rollers if needed. I would like to get the 1550 cause it seems a little bigger but almost fits the size to be legal for carry-on luggage. If people have had luck getting through security with the 1550 then i'd like to hear their stories. If it has been more of a hassle to get through then maybe I should get the 1510 and pack what i can't fit in there in the check-in.

any thoughts anyone?

Re: Pelican 1510 vs 1550

My only thought: The 1510 is, in theory anyway, going to qualify as carry-on with every U.S. flight. The 1550 may or may not, depending on the airline.

I own the 1510, btw. I like it a lot.

Re: Pelican 1510 vs 1550

Another comparable case I saw at the local shop was the Stormcase iM2500. A little too big for airplanes, i think but i may be wrong. Has anyone had experience with these? How do you like them? What stood out were the latches and comfortable rubber handles. But how does it compare to Pelicans foam, build, latch durability. Both Pelican and Storm offer Lifetime Warranties. I already have a Pelican but not one with Rollers.

FWIW, I love my Storm case. Excellent build, handle, latches! I can even sell you one.

Re: Pelican 1510 vs 1550

I'm looking at the iM2500. If that's the one you have and/or are selling, what else can you tell me about it? Have you travelled with it? On plane? Getting through customs? etc...

Re: Pelican 1510 vs 1550

Went back to the local shop to compare the 2 cases, Pelican 1510 and StormCase iM2500, better. Seems the 2 are pretty darn similar. Outside dimensions - 1510: 22" x 14" x 9" and the iM2500: 21.7" x 14.1" x 8.9"

I can't really tell which has a better build. The Stormcase has hinges that are almost the full length of the cover, as oppose to Pelican's hinges which are smaller. That makes the Stormcase seem more sturdy. But I do like how the Pelican case hinges kind of 'lock' in the open position, so to not accidentally close on your fingers or your camera.

The Pelican has a flimsy retractable handle whereas the Stormcase has a solid feeling one. Pelican's wheels are skinny hard plastic and the Storm uses wider, hard rubber wheels. Another thing to consider are the handles. I noticed first that Stormcases handles are a lot more comfortable, made of rubber. The Pelican has a rubber inner coated handle. But the Pelican has 2 handles, top and side. The Storm has 1 but maybe the retractable handle can double as a top handle too.

As far as the interior, the dimensions are pretty much the same. StormCase: 20.5" x 11.5" x 7.2" and the Pelican: 20" x 11.4" x 7.5"
I liked the Pelican's softer foam. The Storm has the harder foam that older Pelican's had. Both have multi-layered pick-n-pluck foam and lifetime warranties.

I almost wanted to get the Stormcase iM2500 because it came out before the Pelican 1510, both made for flight travel.

So they have a good balance in features. One doesn't really out-weigh the other, for me anyway. So i'm have a hard time deciding.

Re: Pelican 1510 vs 1550

I've got the Pelican 1510 and like it a lot for it's carry on dimensions. I recently traveld from Detroit to NY and had no problems with puting it under the seat. I am a bit currious about something though... When the 1510 went through the x-ray conveyer they asked if it was mine, then had me step aside as they ran a few other tests on it. They never opened it up but used a small circlular cloth on all of the handles or where my hands would've touched. The handle, the latches, etc. Any ideas on what this was?

Re: Pelican 1510 vs 1550

yeah. I've had that done to me a few times because i'm a terrorist. nah nah just kidding. They are wiping those areas with the cloth and sticking it into a machine that reads to see if there is residue of a number of things from gun powder, to rocket fuel, to whatever else is used to make bombs. I could see why they would suspect a case like the pelican. It looks, well bomb proof and all pro and **** like that.

oh btw - i ended up getting the 1510. I like it so far.

Are you sure that was the Pelican? I have a 1510 and it has a really thick and solid luggage style handle, non-retractable, with a soft rubber underside for comfort, and a super-robust three-section hinge on each side of the handle.

Edit: Ooops. Moot point. I see you bought the 1510 anyway. :)
