PCMCIA Firewire cards

I haven't really heard of any issues. I haven't used them personally. Should be fine.

I would recommend getting a fw800 though, instead of the fw400 card you linked to.

Thanks Jason. I am also looking at a LaCie FW800

What would be the appropriate laptop specs for these. They don't list it on their site.

I currently have an old IBM T41 - Pentium M, 1.6GHz, 512 RAM. I know this is now where near suficient for capture but would this be passable for basic test capture using DV Rack and editing on a program like Sony Vegas?

That system will work fine for capturing with DV Rack 2.0 HD.

You only need a fast CPU if you want to view the HD video in realtime. Capturing doesn't require that much CPU power, and runs at the highest priority. I can record using a P4M 1.5GHz with no dropped frames.

I second Jason's advice, get a card that can do FW800, or one that gives you both FW and USB2.

Quick question, will there be any issues if I record to my laptop using the FW800 port but stream the footage onto a hard drive using the FW400 port?

That should be OK. Using two separate buses (which is what you'd be doing) is less likely to cause contention, and I've even successfully recorded to a Firewire drive that was daisy-chained in between my laptop and my HVX.
