PCMCIA drive - USB to CardBus

Again and again, but if it would work, it could be the answer.
I found a PCMCIA drive with an USB 2.0 connector. With Win XP and Mac it will work without additional drivers.
If one connect it with an USB OTG drive, the question is, will the USB OTG drive recognize the P2 card inside the PCMCIA adapter as a harddisc? and start the transfer?? If its like my speculation it is a 300 € solution for offload P2 cards independend of the camera.
Sorry, the page is in german

To my knowledge, there aren't any USB Cardbus readers -- they have all only supported PCMCIA. The ad does seem to suggest that it supports Cardbus, however. Does anyone read German?

My guess is that this is designed for a particular Cardbus card, and that just any card won't work.

That type of device will never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever work.

Ever.

Ever.

Never.

Those things are made for reading 3G modem cards.

The P2 card needs a specific driver installed that reads the card. It can't be done through a generic USB device. The computer sees that as a USB device, not a P2 device. The card has to be directly connected through the PCMCIA bus, or through a device made specifically for P2 that inherently has its own driver installed (such as the duel-systems adapter or the Panasonic P2 Drive) in order for the computer to see it as a P2 card.

Now, if you want to spend the money and try it and prove me wrong, I'm sure the entire community would be thrilled to find out that we're all wrong and there is a cheap/free solution. Nothing would make us happier! But I feel very confident in saying that after a year of searching, and after torching my own money buying and trying these things and having them all fail, *all* exploration of cheap/generic USB readers is wasted effort. You simply can't get there from here. There's a bridge that needs to be crossed, and it isn't being crossed. The card reader device itself would have to support P2, apparently, and it doesn't. Only the Panasonic one has the requisite hardware to understand the cards.

I'm not saying that it wouldn't be possible maybe to create a relatively affordable reader, but it would have to be *specifically designed* to support P2 media. And if it was, you can bet that it would loudly say so in its advertising.

Yes, I have been very simple hearted. Sure, all you guys are searching for the cheapest solution and I as a newbie..... Mea culpa.
So I have to start again with the reality. (I called to the dealer and he affirmed Barry`s knowledge)
