Hi, i want to record a teacher in a classroom. He is 5 foot far away from me.
Will i have a better sound with the built-in omni mic from the pcm-m10 ?

Or will i have better quality with the azden sgm-x shotgun mic plugged in the azden sgm-x ?

Thanks for your answer,
Julien

The microphones (two of them) in the Sony PCM-M10 are cardioids, but likely not significantly better than omnis.
The Azden shotgun may provide better performance, but I wouldn't bet my supper on it.
I wouldn't run out and buy the Azden with the hope of significantly better performance.
The very most effective thing you can do to improve quality is to move the mic a lot closer.
Attached to the teacher if at all possible.

I shoot teachers in classrooms frequently, and always use a wireless lavalier mic on the teacher, sometimes supplemented by a fixed or pass-around handheld cardioid mic for student questions and general ambience. Sennheiser G2 equipment in my case, but even a cheap wireless unit would be better than any kind of microphone at the camera position.
