Hi,

I want to upgrade my PC so I can edit 4k footage. My PC is 5 years old but still works great with HD footage...render take quite some time though. I don't know much regarding pc components, so is there someone that can tell me if I can just upgrade 1-2 components without the need to change my computer?

Here is my set-up:

Intel Core i7 860 (2.80GHz)
Asus P7P55D motherboard
8 Go of RAM
Nvidia GeForce GTS 250

I think you need a new computer as your current computer isn't ideal for upgrading to edit 4K. This is what I am upgrading to using Edius 7 as my NLE software. Your NLE software may dictate your computer specs. I will re purpose my current hard drives and a couple of other componets in the new build. Price is around $1500 from avadirect.com.

If you use DaVinci Resolve or intend to that will dictate your build. There is a Windows Setup Guide on the Support Section of the Blackmagic Design Site under Davinci Resolve. The recommendations of parts are fairly specific and will help you build a machine that will have the proper requirements. Mark's setup guide is a portion of the way there but a bit under speced on some things.
 
I don't use Davinci. I use mostly Premiere Pro, Photoshop, After effects and Soundbooth.

First -> try it and see what happens. Then I think you will find that 4K is a lot of bytes to move around. You will outrun your hard drives. I am guessing because you don't mention your hard drives. Try adding one a Samsung Evo 850 SSD drive on the 6GB SATA Bus. You should then have enough bandwidth to get the video into and out of your NLE. From reading the good posts above you can see it can get very complicated quickly. A really big "It depends" going on here. How many streams, short form or long form, Gpu assisted?, how fast do you need to go, and on and on. But maybe just adding an SSD will let you get started and feel your way.
