PC over mac?

What kind of 4K are you looking at trying to handle? That's a big question. We recently edited a Red Epic short film with a 2008 Mac-Pro on Final Cut Pro X. Shooting on Red allows you to do that, because honestly the codec is very robust. Also, Final Cut Pro X is FAST! I recently purchased a used 2008 Mac-Pro, 3.0 GHZ 8-core, 14 GB RAM, upgraded GPU. I edit and finish 1080p (mostly DSLR) videos, from 5 minute length to 2 hour length without a hitch. I purchased the system for $800 (including shipping). I've already made the money up with the work I've got since.

You can pick up a newer system (2009 on) for around $1200 for an 8 core. I'd recommend that, and FCPx (which I'm now in love with after using Avid Media Composer for 10+ years)

Not sure about what ill be shooting in 4k, just want to safe proof myself for a few years. Possibly getting the panasonic gh4 so may be editing that soon but dont want the computer to not be able to handle anything I get over the next couple years.

Interesting idea, i havent thought about a mac pro, they were too expensive back in the day and now I would have just purchased a new imac without thinking about that. Do you recommend somewhere to buy an old mac pro?

I purchased mine on Ebay, and I recommend just looking out for them there.

For instance, this is a pretty loaded machine. You would probably want to upgrade the video card to a 1GB or more, but it's got a good amount of RAM already, and it's ready to go.

Mac-Pros can also be expanded quite easily with faster processors, more RAM, SSD system drive, etc.

Don't go to best buy... you probably have a local shop full or nerds that can custom build a system for you. Or I believe Fry's offers a service as well.

The new Mac Pro is great but very expensive, and I'm personally still not much of a fan FCPX but some people (especially those newer to editing) love it, and the OS/system/NLE is highly optimized. FCPX is also only $300 which you can factor into total system cost...

Personally I use a PC with Adobe Premiere, I recommend 32gb of RAM if your projects are of any decent size.

great thread! i'm in the same boat and i've had a buddy help me piece together something. but before i pull the trigger i'd love some advice from those willing to help me out. i'll be working predominantly with the 2k and 4k raw footage from the fs700/odyssey 7q combo in premiere cs6 and resolve. and i'll be working on offline editing gigs at best while mostly looking to outsource the projects i shoot. but i need something that can at least cut a 4k music video or short promo. long story short i'd love to get some feedback from everyone on whether this build will be able to handle those types of work loads and situations. any advice is greatly appreciated!
