anyone know anything about how to extract 3d models/textures
from pc games? id like to fool around with some of the characters in xsi...just wondering if there is an easy way to get at those models.
Rich- If you have the actually game CD/DVD, sometimes it might contain the UV maps and textures form the game. I know some of my games I have like flight simulator has all the bitmaps for all the models. I don't know why that is but its there. Most games have their data files encrypted. But that dosen't mean you can't extract them. I know theres programs out there that will allow you to decrypt their files. I remember when I had dark forces and I wanted the light saber soundFX effects but the sound file had a encryption. So I went online and found this crazy program that extract those specal files to wav. I had all the starwars ligtsaber sound effects. that was long ago. Anyways dude good luck.
Alot of games are designed to come with MOD kits included. (Black Hawk Down, Battlefield, Desert Combat). People turn games into completley different versions.
not really sure, the only game i have installed right now is half life 2...so i was thinking about trying to pull models out of that. i have been searching online since i posted it. just found out half life was made with xsi. maybe it will be even easier.
yeah, png is an image file...i have never used it, supposadly its a compressed file...but is lossless...so it would have the quality of an uncompressed file...but have small file size.
hey i was just at that site! doh! thse game sites are so cluttered and have so much shite. so many seem to take you on little journeys across the net only to come to a pay site or some shite...
"PNG (Portable Network Graphics), an extensible file format for the lossless, portable, well-compressed storage of raster images. PNG provides a patent-free replacement for GIF and can also replace many common uses of TIFF."
I only know of games that use the unreal engine can be back modified. UnrealED is a map-maker program that comes with any game developed with the Unreal engine. From 99-2003 it was a ***** to convert a .UT (map) back into a mesh to be used with Max or lightwave. But now they have a direct conversion plugin for Maya to import and export maps. THe SDK might have a converter plugin or program but usually its the community that drives the accessability of making mods. If its a hot game and people are going through great lengths to creat these mods for clan scrims and stuff you will start to find home programmed utilities for things like mapping and meshing. Unrealtournament's community is one of the biggest FPS cummunities around and the number of maps created by users are in the thousands along with game play mods and charactors/skins. I would suggest trying modding in Unrealtournament first since its the easiest to work with importing and exporting but you have to use Maya unless you have a mesh converter and build in XSI, import to Maya, export to filename.UT2.
.PNG files are great for Flash animations where you need transparencies for blurred moving text and gradients using an alpha channel.
Getting into game modding now are we? Be sure to check out www.polycount.com and cgtalk.com The message boards on both of those sites are full of info for modding the latest game engines and are frequented by artists in the industry. Grab that HL2 SDK and you should be good to go.
not getting into moding, i want to understand more about how games work and their engines. i do previsualization for a living and want to try and make what we do as realtime, and as awesome looking as we can. game engines, and how they are optimised are i think the future to previz work on films. would like to integrate some of their technics with ours to make what we do better and faster.
Yup, game engines for previz. Heard speilberg used the unreal engine for some previz. Not sure on which film, but it is being done. It sounds like you are moving on the right track with games engines advancing as they are these days. The next release of the unreal engine looks freakin incredible. For those who have not seen it http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/ut2004/screenindex_6098240.html
Not sure if i like it from a gaming perspective as I play games to escape reality and the drive toward realism concerns me, but it looks excellent regardless. BTW, you are an XSI user , right? How bout' some info on the $495 package. I'm looking into buying a package soon and this one looks great for the price. thanks!!!
the 495 package seems like a steal to me. im kinda shocked that its so inexpensive for what you get. for the longest time we were spending about 10G's per seat of XSI. the cool stuff thats missing from the foundation package is stuff like Rigid and Spring Dynamics,Syflex Cloth (a little better the the standard one), Hair & Fur, compositing....there is a bunch more, but alot of it is render wrangling stuff, distributed rendering stuff.... the foundation package is quite robust, and definitly worth 500bucks...
would like to know what show steve s. was using game stuff on, we did the previz for his last movie terminal, which we didnt have any of that stuff on. maybe war of the worlds? i dunno who is doing the previz for that...maybe they are using some game stuff for it, i dunno, i do know he is really big into making it as interactive as possible.
