partial clips

In broadcast 4 the p2 utility dosn't allow me to import partial clips into the bin. Can anyone help me with a work around? thanks

What do you mean by importing partial clips? One with In/Out points, or a clip that was recorded in multiple segments? Which version of Edius 4 Broadcast do you have?

Thanks Thoff. I have version 4.03. By partial clips I meant clips that were spanned over two p2 cards. They usually show up in the editor with the little exclaimation mark on them

A related question: when I do my imports, I usually end up with a sequence clip that Edius has made out of the two partial clips that spanned two cards AND at least one of the partial clips. This is confusing because I end up labeling the partial one only to realize it is only partial and that I have the sequence one I would do better to use...

How does one gain control over how Edius treats the import of these clips?

Thanks!
M.

How about this as well...

I offload my p2 cards one by one via my laptops pcmcia slot. What is the proper way to offload them when clips span both cards. Is Edius going to connect them for me? Or, if I just dump them via windows from the card to a folder on my HDD, is the 2nd part of the clip (which would share the same clip name) going to overwrite part one of that clip?

Does that make sense?

Well Jason, you've stumped me for this week...
If EDIUS is smart, then dumping each card's content into separate folders and "mounting" each folder in P2 Select will magically link them, but it depends on how P2 Select "looks" for cards.

So does that mean, what you just described didn't work?

I haven't had opportunity to try it too much, because It's rare that I shoot over 21 minutes before dumping. I have dumped the cards in Windows into the same folder (without using EDIUS, or p2 select). I didn't think to check at the time, but I figure it overwrote the first clip with second part of it from the 2nd card.

I haven't tried... P2 select, copy and import one card into designated folder. Then doing the same with the 2nd card into the same folder.

I also haven't tried what you described, because I don't know what you are talking about :) I'll have to look into that when I get home.

Scrappy, to answer your question, since we are both using the same laptop, and you are probably using your pcmcia slot to offload... I don't know about p2 select preventing you from offloading partial clips or not, but you can just offload the contents folder from your p2 card into a designated folder on your HDD. The if you go to p2 select/add folder/ find the folder that contains the contents folder, and then look in it. You will see all of your clips from that card. Even the partial clip. I have done it this way more than once, so that should be one way you can have use of those partial clips

Jason

For example your folder for the p2 select would be (just an example) G:Footage/p2 dump/
You won't want to click into the contents folder. You will just want to get to the point that you can see the contents folder. Does that make sense?

Hi Jason,

Not sure whether P2 Select is smart enough to link local folders with P2 card data in them or not... don't have the stuff to test it right now.

It seems the card identifier is put in each folder, so hopefully it is smart enough...

Thanks Jason,
I'm sort of doing that. When I click add folder in the p2 select and it has one full clip and one partial and I click the add to bin for the partial, what happens is the partial clip doesn't move but the other clip gets entered.

You're saying that you copied your footage to your hard drive first, independent of EDIUS right? Then when you go to p2 select, you go to add folder, and add that folder that you offloaded your clips to, right? Then you are doing direct import right?

If that is making sense, and that is what you are saying as well, it should allow you to load the partial clip into your bin. That is how I usually offload my cards.

I'm sorry, I think I might be missing something. If you have already offloaded your card prior to going into p2 select, then you just do direct import. Not copy & import. That is what you are doing, right?

I am on v4.1 by the way. This method has allowed me to view partial clips

Let me know if I we are talking about the same thing

Brandon, I think that the p2 clips themselves may be smart enough to link themselves.

I am not absolutely positive, but I think I have a clip that has spanned two cards. Here is what I did...

-I put p2 card in pcmcia slot.
-I create a folder on my edit HDD that I want to dump to.
-I copy the contents folder of my p2 card over to my designated folder on my HDD. I put the 2nd p2 card into the pcmcia slot and copy it right into the exact location as the first. Choosing overwrite all.
-I open EDIUS. I go to p2 select.
-I click new folder. I locate the folder that has the contents folder in it. In this case "H:Drama Fest\Re-Birth\Suicide\

That is the folder that contains my contents folder. I click ok. Note: you do not navigate into the Contents folder, just up to it.

I highlight the clips and direct import. I look at the clip that spanned two cards (and shared the same filename from both cards) It is 27 minutes long. At 720 24pn that would mean that I filled up one card and put an additional 7 minutes on the 2nd card. I'm not 100% positive, but 27 minutes is 27 minutes.

So all you have to do is dump your footage onto your editing drive(s) before ever opening EDIUS. Now if EDIUS will be capable of re-assembling them by doing a copy & import within EDIUS for each of the two cards, I don't know.

Scrappy, hopefuly that will help solve your dilemma as well, seeing that you won't need to worry about partial clips. (if I am correct, and not missing something obvious)

Thanks Jason, I was importing clips onto a harddrive with p2 genie, independent of edius. After that, I opened edius and used p2 select selected the clips and hit the add to bin button. I didn't use the copy feature. Here is a strage twist, if I play the clip while it is in the p2 viewer I can directly add it to the timeline, although I'm not able to put it in the bin. Thanks

Sounds reasonable - putting the contents from multiple cards into the same folder would let P2 Select "see" it all.

Actually, if you have multiple PC Card slots and can mount multiple cards, then P2 Select will also auto-link spanned clips. Most useful if you have the P2 multi-card "drive" unit.

Just one pcmcia slot on the lappy here. But it's nice to know that there are no extra steps involved in combining spanned clips that are offloaded one at a time.

I'm gonna have to try it through EDIUS as well. See if that works (next time I actually span two 8 gig cards recording 720 24pn!)

Jason

Two 8 gig cards? Wow, you have $$!! Oh wait, Panasonic relented a little on the pricing recently, didn't they?

:) Yeah. No dollars from me. A fat loan though. The cards were 1050 a piece from spec-comm when I got the cameras. I'm getting two more with the p2 rebate, so that will be good. I'll have 2 8 gig cards per camera.

I'll be looking into the cineporter when it is finally released, but I'm gonna have to try to make the money up front for that.

Jason
