Part Time to Full Time (change in fee?)

Hey, guys.

The company I do some freelance work for wants to bring me on full time, and they asked me (literally) what a full time videographer/editor makes as compared to a part time.

I don't even really know. I don't know. They're a good company and I don't want to screw them (and, I'm sure they're asking around, themselves), so my question is, basically, this: What do I tell them?

Right now, I'm at $500 a day, freelance. Does full time change this?

It may involve me having to upgrade equipment, too, but those are things I'll hash out with them when the time comes.

Thanks!

Yes, you won't make $500 unless you are amazing and the company is bringing in a ton of high paying business. I would expect between $125 and $225 a day if you are really good. It really depends on what market you are in and what you are shooting/editing.

But remember that full-time employee status has tax consequences that may or may not be good for you. $200 a day salary versus $500 a day billing freelance may net you much more in your pocket or much less in your pocket after everything is taken into account. Talk to your accountant. (As for upgrading equipment, as an employee they buy and own your tools - not you)

haha, $200/day when you were making $500, I'd say no thanks. But that's just me. If I was making $500/day I would rather keep my independence unless I was doubled to $1,000/day ;)

Thanks for the replies. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.

Basically, the work is in NYC and it involves shooting concerts/interview packages and then editing them.

While staff pays half what freelance does, it offers benefits and what we sometimes confuse with job security.
It's up to you if you want to trade some rate for volume.
I like working less for more, myself.

What makes you think a freelance day rate means that is the earnings of the freelancer 5 days a week, month in and month out?
