Part real-time, part slo-mo

Does anybody know how to achieve this? I'm not sure if it would work with Vegas but I'm posting here anyway.

What I'm talking about is when part of the footage is real-time, and the other half is fast-motion or a timelapse.

I know this happens in the short film 'Cashback' which can be downloaded on iTunes. It happens in lots of movies but I can't think of any other than Cashback off the top of my head. I know its some kind of compositing work, but I can't figure out how to do it.

Easy ... just have two tracks, and go to your pan/zoom window and select the MASK. You can then cut where ever you want on the top track, to reveal as much of the bottom track/frame as you want ... each track will have its own velocity envelope, or only one will, if the other is normal.

Hope that makes sense.

Ok but I would have to film the scene twice, correct? One with the fast-motion and one with real-time, keeping the camera in the exact same place?

So... I'm new to Vegas and I suck at this. When I click on mask and I try to "cut" the top track, it is just the hand thing moving around the picture. I'm not really cutting anything...

I imported 2 identical video tracks and I'm trying to make the right side play faster than the left side.

K, check out your help menu & look up "mask", you'll learn a lot.

That hand thing you're talking about is to just move the workspace around. You'll want to click on the tool set to the left of the screen and select the first fountain pen point looking thing ... called ANCHOR CREATION TOOL.

Take that and make four clicks with it to form a box, and you'll see the effect that will happen. It'll make anything inside of that box (or outside, depending on if you have a negative or postive value set to it - again more options just to the right of that tool set bar) completely disappear, showing the track underneath (this is more easily represented if you have NOTHING or a DIFFERENT clip underneath vs. the same exact one.

Now, what ever you have on the track beneath it will show through where you created your mask. You can take that mask and make it as large or small as you want, add as many anchors as you want to create any shapes that you like, and even key frame it across the workspace to follow objects you want to mask, make animated effects, etc. When I learned this, it opened up a whole new world of possible effects for me ... it'll do the same for you as well, I'm sure.

Now for your question on the velocity issue, no you don't have to film the same scene 2x. On either or both of your clips you'll want to right click on them & then choose INSERT VELOCITY ENVELOPE. Once you've done that, you can increase the entire clip all the way up to 300% with this tool/envelope, slow it down, etc. You can also create additional points to where it'll speed up & slow down at your command.

Just mess around with it & have fun. Hopefully that helps.

Wow thanks for in-depth response. I get how to do it now. What I'm wanting with my shot, is to have a character walk along in real time with time-lapse or very fast-motion traffic. I think I will have to shoot the scene twice, because I want the traffic to go for a while. Actually nevermind, the shot would only last 10 seconds max.

Yeah, I too was thinking of that, see I use Animation to make music videos so its cool to know how to take the clip at normal speed, then at a certain spot in the clip it slows down. So, all I need to do is just look in the help menu and it can explain what I need to do.

Too much work.

Have your actor walk rrrrreeeeeaaaaaallllllll sssssllllloooooowwwwww, and film normally. Then speed up the footage in post. He'll be moving (more or less) normally, everything else will be zipping by.

Oh, one of THOSE shots. I was litterally thinking about what I saw in the Hero Fest short (There Goes The Neighborhood) ... where characters on HALF the screen were moving fast, while the other was moving normal.

Yes, to have someone moving at normal in a FAST crowd, etc., have them move very slow, but VERY carefully as well (SOLID muscle control), otherwise it'll have a RING effect, as they quickly jerk from one movement to the other when you speed all the footage up.

Would I be able to do the method explained to me on the beginning of the thread for this idea? If I made the box thing and sped up where the character was not, would that work? I'm sure I would probably need a static shot, though.
