I know I'm going to get roasted by some old-schoolers here, but can someone tell me why people like this movie? Its krispy kreme donut-maker slow pace just craaaawwwwwllllls along. And then once the story finally does get going, it's really not that interesting. Okay, he left his kid. Now he's trying to salvage the relationship. It's only barely interesting. So why do people love this movie so much?

The reason I checked it out is because Sam Mendes said it was a huge influence on him for American Beauty. I can't find a single connection between the two myself besides the frame being relatively still throughout.

Don't forget that this is also one of the best shot films of all time. Robby Muller is the man...and yeah it has a slow pace, but what Wim Wenders film doesnt?

The deliberate pace of a Wenders movie or a Bresson or a Jarmusch or something like that tends to be too slow for a lot of people. I'd throw Days of Heaven in that category too. But I love em all. Slow doesn't have to mean bad.

I think alot of what makes people not be able to sit through Wim Wenders movies is how he uses a score, its often so spare....and Americans in particular are not used to not hearing music to keep them involved in the movie.

Really? You think this is one of the best shot films of all time?? I mean maybe back in 1984, but I was paying special attention to the cinematography (I certainly became too bored to pay attention to the story) and was underwhelmed. There were a couple of good wide shots and I was trying to figure out how they shot inside a car in the bright daylight and still kept the actors perfectly lit with what seemed like just a camera (obviously I wasn't there but it just didn't look like they were using any lights). But I can think of maybe 50 movies off the top of my head that were shot infinitely better.

Any one of Terrance Malick's movies.
Any one of Michael Mann's movies.
Braveheart
There Will Be Blood
American Beauty
Garden State
I'd even put movies like Forest Gump, I Am Legend, or most any recent Hollywood movie in front of this to be honest.
etc. etc.

And on top of that, who in their right minds would think that this beautiful woman would ever be with this run-down loser-looking of a guy? It is beyond the realm of possible.

Paris, Texas was a decent movie.

It started out VERY GOOD... then the pace slowed down and the creativeness seemed to teeter until the unsuspecting reveal (finally) and then the movie got interesting again, but only to slow back down. When I say slow down, I don't mean speed but the rate of my interest being held. Sure slow films can be great but if there is no content in the context of the slowness, then who really cares?

I don't think it's BAD, it's just not AMAZING. :cheesy:

Speaking of long and slow films which are good, anyone want to support me when I say Meet Joe Black was a great film? ;)
