Parents ? Question regarding children

Man, thartley, you're scaring me. My daughter is two, and I feel like I'm going to blink and I'll suddenly be walking her down the aisle.

Yeah, but there was a lot of THIS in between: :D

She is SOOOOOOOO gonna kill me! hahahaha!!!!!!

John--I'm amazed that you're even questioning your parenting. There is no way 5-6 year-olds should be left unattended. Aside from the (very small) threat of abduction, a child that young can get lost and/or in trouble in a hurry. My kids are 6 and 9 and they're always supervised. My older one will be 10 this summer and I'm just starting to feel she's capable of being a little more responsible and independent. Things *were* different when I was a kid, but the world has changed.

I agree with what's being said here... the world is different, and totally unsafe these days. Being "protective" of your child will only benefit them in the long run. There is a false idea that someone who is protected when they're a child won't be able to function in real life. I think that's a bogus idea, and I think it's only right to be extra cautious of your children. You're responsible for their well being.

John,
good on you! And like others suggested, no need to have this confirmed by anyone. In the end it will be your, and your wife's instinct that is the CORRECT way to raise your child[ren]. So what feels right, probably is!

We have a rule in our house (three kids), that we allow our kids ONLY to go to someone who we know, e.g. met the parents and other siblings at numerous occasions. To each their own, and this is our way.

john,

two words: samantha runnion. no way in hell i'm letting my kids play alone w/o adult supervision. can't just assume the area is safe. all it takes is one idiot to be at the wrong place at the wrong time to snatch up a kid. i'm over protective, yeah. but knowing my 3 kids whereabouts keeps me secure knowing that they're safe. my 11 year old understands. better to be overprotective rather than saying, "what if"....

Hey John, I think you are totally right to be protective over your family and kids, times have changed so much since we were kids. Exploring the neighborhood and beyond for kids that young is no longer an option. I have a two year old daughter and another one on the way and the well being of my family is the number one priority.

If yourself and your wife feel bad about keeping your kids on a tight leash you can increase the amount of organised activities they participate in. That way you can be sure they are socialising, staying healthy and learning all the other skills they will need later in life.

My wife and I often remind each other that we only have one chance with each of our children. One chance to buckle them up properly, know what they're doing in the yard and who they're spending their time with.

We don't keep them from experiencing the world, we do our very best to keep the dangers of the world from them.

They'll have plenty of time to take risks as they get older.
