Parents out there

The girlfriend and I don't plan on ever having kids. I admire those who can pull it off, but I'm just not one of them. We've watched our friends have kids and we've seen how they've changed. We don't want to give up our lifestyle.

and hope they don't turn into a teenager too fast.

Wishful thinking, that one. Last week, I was watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with my daughter curled up in the bend of my knee on the sofa (her favorite place to rest when she was little). And tonight I am watching CSI all by myself cuz she's at work. I'm not sure what all happened since last week, but it was a helluva lot, apparently, and entirely too fast in passing.

Seems like life goes really fast for most you...atleast in the parents perspective.

I turned 15 back in February...cain't wait till 16...but i find it weird...when i look at my life..it seems almost like an eternity to just get to the age of where im at now...but when i look back at a lot my young childhood...then i think to today..it goes by so freakin fast, you duno what hit you.

Now even though im not a parent...thank god not at this age or my ass would be hanging on my dads office wall on a plaque...it seems like havin kids is a fun and good thing...just a few minutes ago..after reading all your posts...i asked my mom and dad why they wanted kids...they said...having kids is prolly the best thing that could ever happen to an adult, seeing your own flesh and blood grow up from its beginnings..and having a best friend...and my dad jus said to me in a sarcastic way...the only reason i wanted you is so i can retire and not worry about where im gonna sleep and eat because i have you to support me...i know he was joking. But there's a lot of truth to that.

It's kinda weird in a way...Your born one day into a strange world that you know nothing of, and your only best friends who wouldnt betray you or anything are your parents, who take care of you for the beginnig of your life then you go off on your own..but then when you get older and they do also..the tables turn and you have to start taking care of them like they did you.

Even though im 15...i still plan on having kids when im about 30....but i still got a lonnngggggg time to go untill that day comes..so for now..ima go pick up girls around my school and be a crazy kid!! :cheesy: lol

Man, this was me a couple of years ago until my wife and I got the big surprise. Having a daughter has been the most challenging thing I have ever done. It has also been the most rewarding. I worked in a record store, made movies, and partied through my twenties. Now, yes I've changed, but just in my priorities and responsibility. I make a concious effort to keep the Rock-N-Roll spirit alive. Having kids does change your lifestyle, just always keep that young fire burning inside.

Kick ass! That's good to hear. There are too many people who have kids and suddenly become "old."

No joke. I'm a firm believer that true age is all in your head. I'm gonna be a kid until the day I die... and living it up with my lil babygirl now (6 months!) is honestly the best thing anyone could ever imagine. When she stares into your eyes... man you just melt! You just can't even explain it until you have your own. I've seriously never loved anything so deeply and true as my lil girl. It's amazing.

Fock. Dude. I'm sorry.

Horse, you are one of the few people on this site that i want to meet and knowing this fact makes me sad.

Great things come out of you when you have kids ... that could be a really bad pun, but that's not how I intend it. What I mean is that people who say "I'm not that strong" or "I could never do that" don't know what they're capable of until they're actually in a position of holding a small, helpless piece of themselves. Like right now for example. Before I had kids, I valued sleep more than anything, and needed an above average amount of it. Now, I'm posting on DVXUser at 2:00 AM, and I'll be up in four hours to go to work, all because my little girl needed me tonight. Never could have done that before, but now I find the strength.

What grade and step are you? I too am on the GS scale, although since I am only 18 I am a GS-2 step 1.....

GS-2210-12/8 (overseas, with LQA, so tack another non-taxable 20k or so onto that.)

And you are putting money into the TSP, right? Right?

Unless you're for sure not going to stay with the whole gov thing, and are just doing this as an alternative to McDonalds.

It's just SO cool to calculate retirement benefits and see that my retirement pay should be just about the same as my current pay.

Wish I had started 10 years earler than I did. I could be done NOW, instead of tapping my foot, waiting, watching the calendar.

Chris contnues to make solid takes.

The key words? ....until they're actually in a position of holding a small, helpless piece of themselves.

And what happens when your lifestyle gives you up?

That was not meant to be an 'ass hat' statement, just trying to get ya to think introspectively.

Chris,
Your're awesome my man! I am the exact same way. I have three babies and when there's things that need to get done but one or all of them need me for ANYTHING, well, guess what happens? The world stops because they need their daddy. Last night I was on my way out the door, late, for a meeting with somebody. As I'm opening the front door my son (4yrs old) and daughter (6yrs old) begged me to play with them for a little while before they went to sleep. I hate that becasue it tears my heart in half but I can't always refuse them so I gave in, easily.

We spent the next hour reading books and learning sign language and spanish from a Sesame Place book. It was one of the most interactive and fun experiences I've ever had with them. lol

Anyway, needless to say I was late to my meeting which wasn't important anyway. You never know what will happen, what if I got into a car wreck or something horrible happened? I don't want them to remember me as the guy who brushed them off because there was something "more" important than them.

I know, lol, I'm wierd.

That's not weird at all coffee.

Do you guys remember the story that was in the news a few years back where this hot college baseball player was offer a gajillion dollars to play big league and he turned it down? Reporters kept asking him why he'd turn something like that down and he said that he'd rather his kids remember him as dad who was always there for them instead of dad the baseball player. That guy gets it. I think most of us here get "it," but that story always impressed me and is permanently stuck in my mind. Esspecially as I balance my family with ambitions of becoming the next Spielberg.

One of the coolest things about watching my little girl grow up is that I feel as if I'm growing up all over again with her. Everyday she learns something new. It's truely amazing looking through her eyes and seeing everything for the first time. We get bogged down by life and the little details get lost. I shoot on the weekends and edit during the night which gives me the opportunity to be a stay at home dad. I'm so thankful to be able to spend so much time with her. Once, I could never imagine having a child. Now, I could never imagine not being a dad.

On another note. I used to wish I could go back in time and relive my youth. Would any of you go back if you could? Now, after having my little girl. I wouldn't want to live without her.

Most inspiring. Sorry to be "rude" Jubal.... Just wondering how ppl do it on lower incomes, as I am one of them. My GF has a 6 year old and I totally feel like a kid again around him. I forgot how fun legos are to play with!
