Paranormal Activity - New Horror Movie is the Next Blair Witch

That's great. Good for him. 19 years old...made it in week with a video camera for 11000 bucks. There's such a great lesson here

We're gonna a ton of copy cat filmmakers jumping on the bandwagon. It happened with Blair Witch. I remember every other filmmaker was suddenly stripping down their gear and going cheap, hoping to capitalize.

Unfortunately, that doesn't work. So, keep sticking with what you're doing, or hit the system again with something different, but equally outside the box

Anyone who plans on making something similar to Paranormal Activity and say its scarier - will make back nothing to 1/10,000 of what this film is making. Hype is king and Hollywood are sorcerers who know how to hype. The audience reaction shots in the trailer are brilliant.

Many tape the audience reactions during screenings, but never use it for promoting to the public.

This movie seriously scared the **** out of me, and not with the jump-horror type, but a very psychological uncomfortability.

For one, I'm one of those crazies that believes in **** like this. And secondly, the foley they use for the 'entity' and it's shananigans are not some otherworldly, computer composed noise base. No...it's just everyday **** you would hear when you're laying in bed, and that's what's so messed up about it. It sends you home second-guessing every level of safety you think you have when you're laying in bed.

My only true gripe is being a wanna-be filmmaker, I was after-thoughting some of the scenes by thinking, "How did they do that? After Effects mask, maybe? Possibly? How did they block his scene so that you can't see the..." Eventually, I allowed myself to get into the story, and by the end, I was fully checked into Hotel Paranormal.

All I can say is that if I ever wake up and my wife is standing next to the bed staring at me...I'm punching that ***** in the skull!:violin:

Wow, just read it will do $20M this weekend for a total gross of $33.5M as of now.

The little movie that could. Looks like next weekend will be really big when it goes to 2,000 screens, this weekend was 760.

Saw it today. I got a tad tipsy with my production team after we wrapped today and they convinced me to go see it (I hate scary movies). And I think it might have been the best 7.50 I spent on a horror film...ever.

I'm damn impressed.

I read an article somewhere online saying that after all is said and done the film is expected to gross around 46 to 52 million.... for an 11k budget mind you.

That is incredible.

I just love stories like this one. (the story surrounding the film and its budget, not the whole "my wife has been possessed by an extreme satanic evil", lol)

The numbers I'm hearing are way higher than that, if you think about it last weekend it played on 760 screens and grossed $20.1M, this weekend it will be on 2,000 screens (about triple), a movie like this before Halloween will do very well, I'd expect a $40M+ weekend coming up then add the $35M it's already grossed. $46-$52M is way too low, it'll have a good run in theaters then probably go back to midnight shows for a while.

I wonder what kind of deal the director will get out of this. According to IMDB, he is scheduled to direct "Area 51" in 2010.

Seems kind of crazy though as he is still a kid.

I'd be schocked if A. Goodman (cheapest guy in hollywood) payed more than $50k for 100% domestic rights to it. Peli won't make anything off it.

I thought Area 51 was being shot right now or just wrapped?

Also... I saw the movie. I wasn't impressed by the story or anything. Great execution though, realizing your limits and creating a movie with limitations. If the movie was remade by Hollywood standard it'd suck.

I thought the ending was very weak, and I expected a bigger pay-off. I think it's over-hyped which lead to some of my disappointment. Just thought the ending could have been better. One stand-out thing to me was the acting, it was very natural.

I can't seem to track this down...does anyone know what camera was used to shoot this movie?

IMDB says Sony FX1. I couldn't tell in the mirror shots but it did look like he had a Rode VideoMic attached, and the shadow of the curled cable matches the VideoMic one exactly.

Mon, Tues, Wed it was the #1 movie overtaking Where the Wild Things Are (played on 3,735 screens) Paranormal has only played on 760 screens and looks like it will go over $40M gross tonight and has a BIG weekend coming up.

Paranormal Activity is the worse film this year, hands down. The ghost kid in the background of three men and baby is scarier.

Actually I thought it was kind of scary. I knew nothing about it and started watching it alone in my living room and got a bit creeped out after the slow start.
