Pany DV53 vs GS9 as playback deck

I've been reading an older related thread and have decided to buy a relatively inexpensive camera to use as a deck. For about the same price I can get a Panasonic DV53 or a Panasonic GS9.

I want to be sure that whichever camera I get I will not lose any quality, data, timecode, etc. I guess my concern stems from wondering if an inexpensive camera has playback heads of the same quality as the DVX100A.

If anyone really knows if one of these cameras is better than the other for this purpose I would appreciate a reply.

Thanks,

Dan K

Either camera will do exactly what you're asking. The playback quality (through firewire) will be identical. If you're playing back to s-video or composite video, they may not do as good a job as the DVX (or they may, I don't know for sure, but it'd seem reasonable that a $299 camera wouldn't have as good d/a circuitry as a $3400 camera).

But for playing out to firewire it's a straight digital transfer, so it'll work at full quality.

If you're only wanting to use it for a deck, I'd probably opt for the DV53, because its battery and charger will be compatible with the DVX. I don't believe any of the GS series use the same battery or charger as the DVX.

1.) Which of these models efficiently and safely transfers video to (with no
timecoding problems!!) and can be used with FCP 4/5:
A.) Panasonic PV-GS19 (some have said timecoding problems
persist)
B.) Panasonic PV-GS31
C.) Panasonic PV-GS2

thanks anyone and everyone for the help,
Sudbury

I would ditch those three options and go with the DV53. I got a brand new one for about 200 dollars and it works spectacular with the footage I shoot on my DVX. I am using a powerbook G4 and I have FCP HD. The timecode syncs up perfectly as well. (and as Barry said, it's nice to have an extra battery, charger and interchangability.)

..if you can find one the discontinued panasonic PV-DV103 is nice too. the batteries on these littl things are so small that they only last a smidgeon on the DVX though.. but using a dvx battery in the little camera will last all day.
