Pantyhose?

Haha, now that I've got your attention. Has anyone ever tried to put pantyhose over the DVX lens? I know usually you would put the net over the rear element of a removable lens, but I wonder if it could possibly work on the front? Perhaps it could be attached behind the sunshade? I guess you'd probably have a minimum zoom/focus. I'm trying to find a workaround for a Pro-mist. And please don't say do it in post....dammit. :engel017:

If so, any suggestions as to color/opacity?
Thanks.

#1) Why would you want to work around the promist? For myself, I use a 1/4 BPM about 85% of the time.

#2) Yes, you would usually put the net behind the lens, but Tiffen makes a 4x4 holder that you can stretch a net on and drop it in the mattebox, kinda handy and fun to play with, lets you try all kinds of fabric.

My only suggestion is to not put the pantyhose over the lens while your girlfriend is wearing them. You end up with a completely different look.

Hehe, thanks guys. Horse, perhaps you could use that technique in your Sci-Fi short:) Only reason I wanna work around the Pro-mist is cuz I ain't got one and I could use the cash to feed myself. It's good to know that Tiffen at least acknowledges the possibility of putting a net over the front of the lens. I shall try it!

So colors. I guess it depends. Black, white, or nude (for a little warming effect?)
Thanks.

Do a test. I'm sure it can work. Maybe even going guerilla and stretching it between the sunshade and the lens...

I might try that... and she might kill me.:)

Give it a go with a few different colors and see what works best. That could end up being a nice and cheap way to go.

 She knows me too well. If I even mention the word "art," she'll sense bullshit immediately.

I have used hose for net over a lens before. I found that super sheer(as sheer as you can find) black net works the best. I would try to find some kind of holder though, as using rubber bands can be a pain in the ass. Besides the 4X4 holder, I am pretty sure that they make a net holder that fits various sized lenses' screw threads. The hose has a tendency to stretch which can change the look. The holders keep the net stretched consistantly for longer. Stay with longer focal lengths and wider apetures which will help keep the net pattern from being visable. Also watch out for direct light into the lens with a net on, it gives an effect, almost like a star filter, that I do not particularly like. Experiment with it.

Don't get discouraged wth the funny looks you will get checking out the hose in a store.

I have a 72mm thread adapter for my Matteblox to attach to. Maybe that'll work. That way I could rubber band it to that and not have to worry about it getting in the way of my focus ring. Thanks dudes. I'll give it a go....

Come on guys....
One of the oldest and best trick in the the book...(mine at least)...
And here you all are talking about it... like, just out in the open...
If it were just one of two of you... I'd just kill you...
Now that it's out in the open like this, everybody will find out...heck...
I don't what to do....LOL...!!!

Seriously though... Still photogs have been doing it for centuries...
The magic of photography... still or motion...

Many 16mm productions I was on in the early nineties used this "trick" to TRY to make it look more like 35mm.

Also, there are two main types of pantyhose material on the market today, rayon polyester and acetate polyester. The acetate based polyester has a much lower refractive index, so it will diffuse the light in a smoother fashion.

Although they're not generally marked as to composition, when new the acetate based hose will have a faintly chemical aroma vaguely reminiscent of paint thinner, or bottom shelf vodka.

Be sure and get good, deep, whiff to make sure you're getting the most optically pleasing hosiery possible.

Cheers,
Joe

"Harmless panty sniffer"- stole it from "Body Double". Dennis Franz to Craig Wasson.
