panning transition / panning streaks

In this short, we have this scene where several flashbacks follow each other. I wanted to go from one to another using a fast-panning from the cam that would let on screen only streaks due of the panning.:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Does anyone knows the best way to do it / shutter speed / focal lenght , or should I be an :kali: adventurous filmaker and try different shots with different values my way...?

:dankk2: again.

(we're shooting with the wonderful DVX of course)

Zooming in would definelty blur the image while panning. You should be shooting at 1/60 (I hope) and lower than that would loer the quality.

It might be. I have never been near nor touched a dvx so i may be wrong. Just have the shutter at whatever its usually set at, and tap teh zoom a couple times.

Low shutter speed would help, but it would also make everything before the pan have too much motion blur, negating the shot. You could have your tripod tilt locked, have your actors preform their stuff and then tell them to stop in place, manually put the shutter to 1/24 and then pan. then you just take the extra in between stuff out in an NLE. Or, you could do a very slow pan with 1/48 with as little blur as you can, take multiple frames from different angles, stich them together in Photoshop, make a very lon canvas 480 pixels high and scroll that in an NLE with motion blur on. That way, you can control every aspect of the movement, how much, how fast, how far, how much blur, everything. Then blending into another shot becomes much easier as the next shot will be the exact same thing except at the begginning.

Make sense?

thanks. I got the first part (until "NLE").
But the second sounds more like the time effect you would use for a Matrix effect (bullet time I believe, when trinity jumps and the camera turns around...but the cheap way to do it...) . Thanks anyway, I'll try your shutter speedpan advice ;)

what you are talking about is technically called a "whip pan" transition. You'll find that if you get the motions and direction of your whip pans to match, it wont matter how streaked it is, the cut will sell and a motif will be established.

if you do want to add more motion blur, you have many options, some mentioned here. You can not pan at all, and create an effect in AE. You can literally just have two layers, and move one in and one out on the X axis. change the shutter in AE and turn on motion blur and you will get a serious blur transiiton.

Personally I would do a normal pan and do what zoostory said. Then at least you have the pan to manipulate (change pan speed, shutter speed in AE) if it doesnt work out just move the layers. Least then your options are open.

(I meant "NLE" included)
Thanks guys. I think I prefer sticking with the real motion of the pan. If I can , I'l lpost you the clip of it ;)
