Panning stereo audio channels

My soundmixer just gave me an AIF stereo file and told me to pan track 1 to the left and track 2 to the right. When I put the clip onto my timeline and try to clik on one channel to pan, it automatically selects both channels. How to I unlink them???

Click on the audio file in the timeline and press option "L", or go to modify> stereo pair.
