ok im trying to figure a lot with dat recorders and mixers, someone help me please :)

1.If I have a DAT recorder to record audio, do I need a mixer too? if so how would they connect together.

2. If the mics go on the recorder...how will they go on the mixer as well?

3. Should I turn off the camera's audio if i'm recording to a recorder? or should i use both audios?

can anyone please help me out with these? thank you

No. But if you do, you hook your mics into the mixer's inputs, then hook your DAT to the mixer's output channels.

Your mics should pass through the mixer first.

Use both audios, it's safer if you have a back up right? And it'll help you check to make sure your audio is in sync if you bring in external audio from a DAT.

As an addendum - depending on your DAT recorder, a mixer is likely to have better preamps.

A mixer also may have multiple outputs; so you can feed the camera and the DAT recorder the same signal. This gives you a very good audio backup, and using the same signal makes hand-syncing really easy.

i will strongly sugest you think again :-)
for the same price you pay for used dat ( 300-450) , you can get good flash based recorder and save some money on dats , not to mention the tascam is not in production for few years , dont know what happens with spare parts
the preamps are not something i will consider to use directly
stay away or look for used hhb tc or non tc , much better recorder, decent pres as well .

final cut----I'm using it to for a short film with a panasonicdvx100b...to connect a boom mic and a wireless mic to it.

buy a mixer and go straight to the camera
if you are insist on external recording becouse the steady cam or any other situation look for used mix pre with r-9 or m-audio behind ( check tappers forums it usually one of the things you can find there for reasonable prices )
if you dont use any fancy camera movement i will definitely suggest you keep the recorder money for better mixer .

Mix Pre is a two channel portable preamp with basic mixing abilities made by Sound Devices. The R-9 is a small and compact flash based audio recorder.
