CX350: Panasonic CX350 SDI Out

I am trying to get an SDI out at 1920x1080 29.97P. According to this manual on page 87, all I need to do is set my rec format to 1920x1080 29.97p and that will output the same on SDI. However, it only outputs 1920x1080PsF. Any suggestions? Am I doing something wrong?

So you are getting a version of 60p with only every other frame included. Is this not working with the other end of the SDI? PsF (set to 30p) should result in 29.97 in an NLE. Not sure how this is being seen on the other end of your SDI cable.

Also, remember that the CX350 has separate output settings for the HDMI and SDI. These settings can be different from the internal recording format if you want. This is a great thing but you need to always be aware of what they are set to. So I would check what your SDI output setting is set to and see if that clears up any issues.

It shows that I am getting 1080i not 1080p. I am sure its user error, but I just don't know what I am doing wrong

Can you take some cell phone snaps of your system recording settings and the output settings? I will try to recreate what you are seeing and we can find a way forward.

Thanks. I had a look around and I did not see very many choices for 30p in the camera. Which I have heard others' discussing over the years. There is 30p in .MOV format which is internal. I guess it has to be PsF for HD-SDI output. HDMI has 30p output, so it must be HD-SDI specific. What is the equipment that is having an issue reading the signal?

As I posted earlier, PsF is really 30p. Especially if your base format is progressive.

This is so frustrating! Nearly Every other camera on the market can do 4K, 12G, true 29.97p out of the back of the SDI. For us in multicamera live production we want 29.97p. This shouldn't be a issue in 2024!!! PSF is a pain....as now you have to make sure all your other gear down the line is in psf mode. I dont understand why on Panasonic pzt cameras i can get every flavor i want of the back SDI...... why not put that into their smaller camera models too......

The only camcorder with sdi 4k is the Canon xf605. There are devices that convert hdmi to sdi but I'm sure they're expensive. I feel because camcorders have dropped off in popularity they're doing the very minimum and could be reserving 12G for broadcast cameras.

I upgraded to the HC-X2 I got one for a "deal" but I'm regretting it. I've already sent it in for a back focus issue and now it has some weird intermittent sensor issue.

Sorry to hear that about the HC-X2. It seems the 'sumer' is being stresses more than the 'pro' in these recent prosumer models.

I noticed it once when I was fooling around in the menu then every day I test it the camera will randomly do it then go back to normal. Very strange. It's under warranty but its disconcerting because how will I truly know it's fixed and I don't want to put it up for sale to pass on to some unsuspecting person.

I know Panasonic closed one of the two service facilities a few years back. So It appears they are backing away from the business of pro video cameras. I just want one more model from either Sony or Panasonic that is more on the pro side. $4,000 - $5,000 would be fine. I do not want cheap as you get the kind of stuff you are experiencing as well as lower class preamps and imaging chips. The Z280 is not a fit for my needs. A little too big, only a 17x optical zoom and $8,000.

You can do 4K through 6G but stops at 30p. I remember when Blackmagic had 12G SDI like in 2014 on the big URSA, just unheard of back then.

Yeah, I can't name any besides like two BMs specifically with 6G-SDI...but models that support 12G usually support 6G (like the FX9).

Better just to have 12G for everything moving forward (or whatever is after that).

Not true. The Z280 has had 4K 12G for almost six years. I'll bet there are others too, but I don't keep up on it.
I'm also not up on every camcorders specs. Basically only a couple camcorders offer it and those cameras are thousands of dollars more.

12G has been around a long time so I can't think of a good excuse not to include it in a 4k camera if it's going to have SDI. The camera companies commonly don't like upgrading unless they think it will sell more cameras. It was a running joke that Sony kept running out new cameras with terrible old lcds because they were trying to use up exess old inventory.
