Panasonic ag-dvx100a or Sony HVR-Z1U HD

NO CA$H

Veteran
I went to a video camera store today and the salesman was trying to talk me into getting the professional sony hvr z1u over the DVX. I told him how i'm going to film school and the DVX is what i get trained with. He said that the sony has all the features that the dvx has plus more. The number one feature i want is 24p. I heard some where that the 24p is different on the sony hvr z1u. What do you guys think?

There is no 24p on the Z1. 24p means shooting 24 progressive frames per second. The Sony does not do this. It takes 60i footage and attempts an approximation of 24p.

See the shootout done by Barry and Jarred for more details.

When a man lies, he murders some part of the world.

I take it the sony costs more, hence bigger commision.

What gets me is that Sony advertises their camera as having the capability to shoot "24p and 30p." That's just flat out unethical!

Just a little advice, when you go into a store the job of the salesman is to get you to buy the most expensive piece of hardware available. In most places salesman have no idea of what they're talking about and if you've done your homework you can call bullshit on them. You are commision to a salesman.

there is absolutely no reason for you to get the sony cam as a film student.

and if your school gets trained with the DVX, what's the big dilemma?

I figured he was lying. It didnt even sound like he knew what the panasonic ag dvx100a was. He called it an antique. lol The only reason i went there was because on the panasonic site it says they are an authorized panasonic dealer. All they had was that new sony hd camera in there. Looks like im still gettin the dvx. thanks for the help. :)

I recently made this decision and went for the DVX. While I was impressed with the native strengths of other cameras (Sony HD and Canon 16:9), I simply felt I'd be able to be more proficient using the DVX.

The same should apply to you, since your own film school will be using it. By the time you're done, you'll know every aspect of the camera! You won't regret getting the DVX.

What store did you go to and what school are you going to?

Sorry, just curious. The video guy here recommends the dvx, by the way, and bought on to replace a pd150.
