Pana Anamorphic vs. Century Optics 16:9 adapter?

Has anyone tested the Panasonic anamorphic lens against the Century Optics 16:9 adapter? I am preparing to shoot a feature length music doc, mostly available light, and am concerned about the loss of light due to the inability of the anamorphic lens to focus wider open than 5.6 at the longer focal lengths. There may be a film out and most probably a bump up to HD involved and I understand the digital squeeze isn't the best way to go.

The Century lens doesn't exist yet, so no, nobody's done a comparison.

How about now? Has anyone tested the 2?

I talked to a century rep at the DV Expo and he gave me the impression they were not even going after that market right now.He could not tell me at all if they were ever going to make one. I did see a prototype for an eye piece addapter for use with the Panasonic anamorphic lens.

I wonder if Century will ever release it. With the DVX100A now offering in-camera 16:9, surely a lot of the clamor for an anamorphic must have dried up. And at 2.5x the price of the Panasonic, how much demand will there be? Might do well as a rental-only unit (like the mini35)... but would there be enough demand to justify continued R&D costs?

I guess time will tell...

Here's and email I got from David Contreres at Century a few days ago:

We are in the process of producing our second prototype unit and hope to have it completed by NAB time for testing. If all goes well the adapter would be available 120 days after April 2004.

He also called me and said the optics on the first prototype was sharp and clear, but there was too much vignetting and that was using 95mm (I think he said) barrel. The 2nd prototype he thinks is going to have a 105mm barrel.

In what way will the Century 16:9 adapter be better than the Panasonic?
In other words, why would people want to buy the Century over the Panasonic?
Will it be based on price difference?
I am just wondering since I may want to get one in the future.
