Pan/Tilt Head

Re: Pan/Tilt Head

Yes, I've used one for over a year. I have the ACPower plugin for it (although the batteries will last for a long time), plus the extra long remote control cord. The only thing I don't like SOMETIMES, is the speed at which it pans. It won't do ultra slow. The slowest setting is a little too fast for some shots, HOWEVER, it's extremely smooth and consistent other wise at all settings. The settings are variable with a slider. That being said, for the money, it's a nice addition, IMHO.

Where it comes in really handy is on a remote camera during a wedding shoot. I can use DVRack with that camera to monitor, and use the remote pan control and a remote zoom/record unit with the DVX. I can set the camera up behind the "flowers" and not get in the way of the ceremony, while I shoot with another main camera. It's nice to be able to get a few remote pans and zooms to include with the second camera instead of just static shots. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Pan/Tilt Head

Great! Thanks for the feedback SafetyO. It looks like I have one more thing to add to me "to get" list :D.

Re: Pan/Tilt Head

wow, that looks like quite a deal.

i added it to my b&h wishlist.

now how quiet is it?

it said it does like 10 or 15 degrees vertical?

i'm surprised this has never come up before, seems like a pretty hot product especially considering the price.

Re: Pan/Tilt Head

Does this pan/tilt head have a ramping feature? ie. you mentioned that it was smooth, does that mean that it ramps its speed from start to stop, no jerky movements?
Do you know approximatly how long it takes to do a full 45/90degree pan?
Thanks for the info.

Re: Pan/Tilt Head

I'll have to time the unit, but it has variable speed control. I think I'll mount a camera on it, and take a video of it "doing it's thing". I'll post it later. How would that be for everyone?

Re: Pan/Tilt Head

Wow, that was great! Thanks for taking the time to do that for us. Much appreciated!

Re: Pan/Tilt Head

Your welcome. If I'd had more time, I'd have documented the speeds and movements better. Might do that later for future reference. :P

Re: Pan/Tilt Head

Thanks Safety - I was looking at this head months ago and wrote if off thinking it was junk [$120 doesn't get ya much these days] Glad to see it works - Could come in handy. Is it noisy?

No, actually it's pretty quiet. I have to put my ear close to it to hear it when it moves. I've never even noticed the sound of it in any shot, but then again, ambient sound is louder then it is. It's a suprisingly solid little unit. Does that help?

Re: Pan/Tilt Head

It does, thanx. I was working on a shot with the camera up in the air and was thinking I would need a stepladder or something to pan. This could make it a tad easier.

Re: Pan/Tilt Head

Hey, SafetyO
Thanks for the link.
In your opinion, do you think it could handle a little more weight. The DVX with a matte box and etc comes to about 7 or 8 pounds. Would this just slow down the operation or just keep it from working all together?

It might handle a bit more than 6 pounds, BUT, I would stick pretty close with the manufacturers recommendation and specifications. I've never had anything on it other than the stock DVX with the big battery. It comes in way under 6 pounds. I think the units motor has enough torque to move more than 6 pounds, but for how long is anyone's guess. I would hope there is a small "fudge factor" for weight built into the unit. However, why chance it?

Personnaly, I think the weight limit is probably due to the vertical axis (up and down) movement and mount. I'm no engineer, but that is the smallest part of the unit, where it pivots vertically. The horizontal seems pretty stout. Like I said, I'm no engineer, but I'd hate to see my beautifully loaded DVX do a nose dive off the top still connected to the mounting plate. ;D

Re: Pan/Tilt Head

Look cool. ;)

One thing, it's take about 25 seconds to do the 90°, so it is good only for focale from 4.5 to 11 if I look to a chart and less in 24 P. :(

Re: Pan/Tilt Head

I assume someone makes a bigger, more $$$ one. Thanx for the wmv. I had never heard of this thing on this level for us broke folks.
