PAL Editing problem

I am trying to use my PAL clips with some jpegs. The problem is when I create a jpeg (720 X 576) and use it in Vegas I get a border on the left and right hand side. I could make a bigger jpeg to fit the screen but I am wondering if I captured the clips incorrectly and therefore my footage is out of proportion. Anyone got any ideas about this?

Re: PAL Editing problem

If you plan to watch/broadcast the clips on TV,
you need to turn on the safe areas on the preview window. This way, do not bother if you are missing something outside the safe areas, 'cause it won't show up on TV anyway.

I had a similar problem trying to resize the JPEGs so they fit into project. By making the JPEG smaller then the original size, you shouldn't have any problems with resolution. It's the other way around that's gonna cause you trouble.

I think that if you dropdown JPEG from Vegas' Explorer to a timeline of a project, Vegas will automaticly resize it (or whaterver it does with it to fit into project). I do not have to resize any of my original JPEGs in order to put them to a timeline.

Try this and let us now how it went.

Re: PAL Editing problem

Thanks for that. I just read in the manual that you can have Vegas automatically detect the size of imported media. I tried this and used the jpeg as the media for Vegas to detect. It seems to have worked alright although it changed the aspect of my captured clips. I will try what you suggested.

Re: PAL Editing problem

O.K., it seems like everything is inside the safe area. One other question, When I auto-detect the media from jpeg I get a pixel aspect ratio of 1.000, when I import a captured clip the pixel aspect ratio is 1.0926. Which one is correct? Thanks in advance...

Re: PAL Editing problem

I think that different media have different aspect ratios. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
I would create a combination of JPEGs, AVIs etc. and test export a 10-15 seconds clip, using standard PAL export template (just change video to "best" quality) to see how will your final clip look like.
If you're happy - that's it!
