PAL brothers and sisters: 25p workflow help???????

Ok, I need help! Please give me any hints! Here is the workflow:

1_ Got footage shot 25p with a dvx, captured straight to disk( Quicktime Pal DV) through DV rack.
2_ Imported in Vegas 7, in a DV PAL prog.scan project.
3_All clips in the Properties , appear to be Upper Field.

When I import the source clips in AE to check they turn up as Lower Field first.

I need to export from Vegas in Full 25p quality and am confused as to the settings before I render them. I cannot afford to miss a field as its a rather bad green screen shoot and I already have artifacts and jagged edges...

I would be gratefull if someone familiar with the Vegas -25p workflow could shed some light to my case. Its the first time I use Vegas and am a bit confused.

thanx in advance

DV is lower field, HDV is upper field. When you export, you simply need to export in "progressive" mode. To get progressive, click "custom" on the encoder dialog and tell it to use that.

Hello Eugenia! I'm uncertain about whether I have to go and change interpretation of each clip or leave it as it is. I understand that the dvx100 records progressive in an interlaced stream, right? This should mean that I have to respect the field order . Is my rationale flawed ?

The problem you may be running into is how DV Rack created the footage files -- I'm not sure how you got Quicktimes out of it; you should have AVIs.

DV Rack should have simply created DV AVIs which would show as progressive in Vegas. If you had shot to tape and captured with Vegas, that's what you'd have. There should be no "field order" to worry about.

Unless, by chance, you didn't actually shoot in progressive mode?

In any case, if you render your project as progressive, you don't have to set each individual clip; the render will affect the entire project.

Anyway, can you post all of the Stream Properties (item by item) of one of your clips from Vegas? Right-click on it and choose "Properties."

Yes, of course. Mental lapse. :)

Quicktime, of course, is not the ideal format for Vegas. I wonder if the different DV audio interleaving makes a difference here.

Ok it seems the footage in Vegas is interpreted as UpperField First which is odd as It is Pal DV. I have interpreted all as progressive and I think I'm OK now. Did a test with some clip captured from tape and it is interpreted as progressive so it must have been something in the way they were recorded from DVRACK.
I wasn't shooting so I can't tell what went wrong during the shoot.
Thanx for your replies!

If you filmed in PAL 25P, make sure that:
1- the project settings have the field-order set to 'none/progressive'
2- the individual PAL DV AVI clips have also the none/progressive field-order (check them after inserting them on the timeline by opening their properties)
3- render the final edit to a progressive MPEG2 or DV AVI file, depending what you want to do with it.

I've had footage where the 2nd aspect mentioned above wasn't right (the fieldorder was seen as 'lower field first', due to the software it was edited and rendered on before I got the footage) and it degraded the progressive scan quality (it lost some sharpness, even when the other 2 aspects (1&3) were correct).
