i purchased a couple of original paintings from a local artist. I am going to use these paintings for my film. What type of release form do i need him to sign?

Get a signed release, stating it can be used in your film. Make sure you specify the formats you are going to be releasing it in. Basically it will be similar to a music release/mechanical license but based on a physical piece of artwork used in a visual fashion.

You BOUGHT them? You don't need to do anything -- they're yours.

(BTW: I'm watching "Encounters at the End of the World" now -- you're right.)

He just bought the painting not the rights to reproduce the artists work in film. Same thing as buying a CD. Get a release like Doc said. Make sure to include the scope of the release both geographically and and timewise.

No release required unless he copyrighted his imagery.
In over 30 years of painting, I have never even thought about speding money on such a thing.
If you wanna be PC, you can simply ask him. He'll laugh and say thank you.
I'd not scare him with any paper work tho.

Whoaaaaaa....I sell my photos all the time but I don't sell the rights for them to use them for any other purpose than the stated use I sold them for.
