Paglight soft diffuser

Hi all,

Based on all the good ratings here, I just ordered a paglight for a shoot starting on Friday. It will be at a Film Festival, so I expect hard lighting conditions so the light will be mounted on top as much as possible.

But I don't want to bother the guests too much with my super bright light, so I figured that a soft light diffuser might not only provide nice light, but also reduces this problem. My main question to users of the paglight c6 kit: I saw that it includes some soft filter, but it seemed that the accesoire to attach it is NOT included in the kit...is this true? If yes it's true, how can I solve this?

Because they just gave me the job and have to order all my stuff in a matter of days I have very little time to experiment, so really anything is welcome on the use of the Paglight in certain conditions. Thanks in advance for all your help!

Cheers,

yohenk

Is this the Paglight C6? If yes, then the diffuser is mounted barn-door style to the front of the light. You just flip it over the lens. The diffuser will help a little bit, but you still have a small harsh on-camera light source. If you want something softer you can clip a sheet of diffusion material to the barndoors of the C6--it helps a little. Maybe use Lee 250 (cuts light ~ 3/4 stop) or Lee 416 (~1 stop) for a diffusuion material. You could also look into those mini softboxes for on-cam lights if you have the cash, but I think they're not that useful when it comes right down to it.

I wouldn't worry too much about bothering the guests, especially at a film festival. I assume the camera will only be on people fairly briefly, so they won't mind (at least from my experience).

Thanks a lot Barry. I think there should be no problem then.

I also ordered the MK012 microphone, so I then have two XLR-microphones. Unfortunately the microphone is also not here yet. My experience with sound and XLR is minimal, so here is the sound-thing that I am a bit uncertain about, please tell me whether I got this right:

I record over 2 channels, so when I get this into my NLE (Liquid Edition) I will get two completely different recordings. Input 1 would be left (or right) and input 2 would fill in the other box. I then choose which one is best for a certain situation and then delete the 'wrong' one and replace it with a second recording of the good channel. This way you get the best sound out of your tv in the end. Is this correct, is this the way 90% of situations are dealt with?

FYI: Pag makes a dimmable globe socket for their tungsten globe. Use it instead of the standard globe socket to adjust your light level to match your ambient.

Cool I'll get that one too. Seems like a *bright* idea (No really, I am exceeding my own creative-with-words power here...)

Thanks for that! Also any comments on the audio question by any chance?

Would you mind posting a link to that Pag-light?

I am looking around for a good on-camera light candidate and can't seem to narrow down my choices. I hear good things about Frezzi, but I've heard a lot of people here mention Bescor...and I have to tell you...I always assume you get what you pay for. So, I don't understand how the Bescor brand could be so popular yet so affordable. Anyone like to help explain please?

Hello lighting gurus....still looking for an answer to my last question. With on-camera lighting, do you always get what you pay for?

Also, Rush has suggested I get the Pag C6 kit because it seems to be the most bang for the buck. It seems to be. But, I wanted to turn to the DVX family before I committed to the purchase. I just wanted to make sure that an on-camera light with it's own battery source is the way to go, vs. getting one with an XLR pin to hook directly into the camera?? Any thoughts?

Finally, 20 watts? Fine in most situations? I've never needed an on-camera light, until now, so any direct advice (i.e. SPELL IT OUT FOR ME) would be appreciated!!

Thanks!

Rick

Well I am no Guru but you ALWAYS get what you pay for. The Pag is a great option and if EVS sells it, buy it there.

Hi Rick, I also wanted to let you know that you can buy the 30W bulb for extra power, but I have never needed that for interviews and such when shooting with the DVX. It also kills the battery in a bit more than an hour. The 20W bulb runs 2 hrs.

Thanks Rush. That's the kind of info I need. I see all SORTS of on-camera lights with wattage differences that go all over the map. If you've never used an on-camera light (i.e. me) then I want to make sure I get the one that serves me well. Based on your recommendation, and Mr. Graff's, I think I just might take your suggestion and pick up that Pag C6 kit. The reason for my hesitation is that I have my eye on a few other "essentials". Jarred Land's battery, the 1.6x Century Optics Teleconverter and Cinetactics Matte box to name a few. Okay, so those things aren't essentials, but when you have your mind made up they are.

I'm about to buy the light but I'd like to have a little more info about this dimmable globe socket?? A link to a vendor would be helful.

thanks!

I personally never heard of that for the Pag C6, maybe for regular Paglight, but I will check on it when I get back in the office.

I've used the Pag C6 for wedding receptions and it's worked great for me. With a 20W bulb and the included diffuser, it seemed to give just the right amount of light for my DVX to bring up the immediate foreground to a good level without the 'deer in the headlights' look. I haven't noticed people reacting negatively or squinting into the light.

I think Rush is right that there is no dimmer available for the C6; only for the upscale line of Paglights. I purchased some extra bulbs in 10W and 30W and an extra bulb socket from EVS. That along with some diffusion material like Barry suggested would give you enough versatility I think.
