Packing PDF-file...good idea?

Hi.

I have just finished my DVD booklet. Just wanted to ask is it a good idea to pack my PDF-file with WinRAR? I'm going to send it to the printing press via email. Is there any loss of quality or anything like that? I made my PDF-file uncompressed, that's why it's so huge.

My PDF is over 80 megs so it would be so much easier to send it via email. After WinRAR it´s like 13 megs. Huge difference.

Thanks,
Pete.

You won't lose anything compressing with Win RAR. You should compress stuff like that anyway before you ftp it -- it reduces transfer time and preserves integrity of your file. I don't know about e-mailing a 13MB file... that's rather large.

I would probably zip it instead - not all places have winRAR.

Also, most printers have FTP servers you can upload to.

I always zip everything I send because many email servers block pdf, eps and ai files (overactive virus killers).

contact the printer and see if they have an upload system. if not, try to zip it. if that doesn't make it small enough, ask them if they have WinRAR before you send it.

Thank you, guys. Morten, what do you use to zip? Is it ok to use WinRAR for zipping also? I see there's an option for zip also...

Just made a zip-version with WinRAR...now it's even less! 11,5 megs.

that should work fine. I usually use the Zip function built into XP to do it. nice and easy.

still, 11.5mb is awfully big for email. try ftp or something like it first. it'll save you a headache, trust me

Ou yeah, thanks again, guys. I will ask them about the FTP. First time when I asked how could I send the files they said that "you can send them via email to this address..."...

True, Tim. The old west man wants to use "old school" methods, right?

One problem solved, another is already waiting, heh!

YouSendIt.com is a good way to "e-mail" the file without actually e-mailing it. I work with a print house that uses that exclusively as their online delivery method.

I agree with Tim. Lick a stamp, drop it in the box, and call them in a few days to make sure they got it. Less chance of file corruption due to computer quitting before it's sent, and it won't take you hours on the PC uploading, and them hours of downloading.
