Pacific Rim

Just got a link to the preview. I'm up for it. If they can spend that much money on it I can spend 12-15 bucks to go see it. Man, it looks good. I'm up for some low cost entertainment, money wise. Looks like a lot of effort went into it.

Oh boy. Half way through it, I literally got distracted - I was like "There is something wrong with the skin tones. This looks oddly cheap in the live action..."

And then I did a little research and saw it was shot on RED.

WTF man. How do I stop letting these color issues bug me?! They didn't bug everyone else?

Yes.

I mostly wanted to post about that voice and my excitement on hearing it, maybe describing the excited noise I made when she first spoke, but then I realized that my nerd colors were showing a little too much. I really see no way this could not be awesome. The buzz sound might be an easy to get one for an early trailer, so hopefully it won't be so emphasized in the final cut. It is getting a bit generic and distracting at this point. I don't even know what would make that sound in a giant robot or alien.

Robots vs giant monsters coming from nowhere, japanese cinema has done this for more than 50 years so I predict the same cr@p as a certain "Godzilla" movie.

What are you talking about? Can you provide some screenshots and details?

As for the trailer, this looks like a B-movie of epic proportions. I'm mainly interested due to who is involved, but I'm sure it'll be a fun and loud big screen experience. I won't be too upset if I end up not seeing it though.

Even though it's an homage, at least this is an "original" story and not another remake, reboot or sequel. That's cause for some hope at least. However, the screenwriter also wrote the horrid remake of Clash of the Titans, which is cause for concern.

But it's directed by Guillermo Del Toro though. So lots of hope from where I'm standing.

Meh...if Guillermo was a storytelling genius I wouldn't be worried. But I've always found the stories to be the weakest part of his films. They are functional at best, sloppy excuses to indulge his fetishes at worst. He can't be expected to pick up the slack in that department.

I thought Pan's Labyrinth was quite excellent visually and story-wise. I'll admit that his other work has not impressed me as much...and some even less than that.

I even had problems with Pan's Labyrinth. Definitely his best but it felt like two different stories that weren't integrated enough. While I understood what he was after, I didn't think the two halves meshed that elegantly. Hopefully it all comes together this time.

I LOL'ed at the "original story" knowing their can't be any good script with such a type of movie, it will be just : humans pawned by giant monster -> the hero is coming with his giant robot -> giant monster pawned by humans but maybe he was not that terrible, protecting something/his eggs whatever but gets nuked anyway -> happy end and good old patriotic fapping.

With maybe some touches of romantic twist in between fight scenes.

Wow ! I just became an hollywood blockbuster screentwriter !

Oh ! And the fact that it's the same writer as Clash of the Titans just put the last swing of hammer on the nail...

For a b-movie idea, this looks exceptionally interesting. Not expecting much, just hoping it's got more depth and story than transformers. I don't see DelTorro doing something that vapid and souless though.

Not sure how I feel about GlaDOS and her voice being in this movie. It's a great AI voice. I get that it's the same voice actor, but the fact that it's also the same process... for portal fans they'll be constantly pulled out because they're being reminded of Portal. Non portal fans however shouldn't have a problem.

Pacific Rim = after giant monsters emerge from the sea, humanity builds giant robots to fight back against the escalating threat

So there can't be any "good" stories from a lot of movie premises.

Avatar = paralyzed guy telepathically controls blue alien man-cat

Lord of the Rings = midget has to walk really far to throw a magic ring into a volcano

Aliens = soldiers get sent on a thankless mission to kill alien bugs (note: Aliens is basically a take on Beowulf set in the future, so Beowulf must be crap as well)

The Terminator = robot from the future goes back in time to kill a waitress before she can be impregnated with future leader

The Dark Knight = rich man dresses as a bat and beats up criminals, faces a deranged clown anarchist who likes to burn money

Gladiator = Australian guy portraying a Spaniard, gruesomely kills people in the Colosseum in ancient times

Back to the Future = teenage rocker goes back in time and has to get his parents to go to a high school dance

Raiders of the Lost Ark = guy looks for relics that are worth money, is hired by the Army to get a biblical artifact before the Nazi's find it

Jurassic Park = on a remote island with a secret laboratory owned by a billionaire, dinosaurs are brought back to life via cloning

2001: A Space Odyssey = a bunch of monkeys kill each other, then an astronaut is nearly murdered by his computer and after that has vision quest upon encountering a giant alien tile floating in space near Jupiter

Star Wars = with the aid of a wizard, a pirate, and a Sasquatch, a farm boy has to fight against the forces of a black space knight in order to save a space princess and learn space magic so he can be a hero

Apocalypse Now = disillusioned army guy rides around on a boat in Vietnam so that he can kill a rogue colonel that is a big bald dude played by a mumbling Marlon Brando

The Godfather = mob guys kill each other all because their don, played again by a mumbling Brando, has marbles in his mouth and no one knows what the hell he is saying

Close Encounters of the Third Kind = guy looks for UFO's

James Bond movies = handsome secret agent has lots of sex with beautiful women, and then he fights megalomaniacs who want to take over the world

Blade Runner = mopey detective kills sexbots in rainy future city

Another way to look at it is it's pretty cheap entertainment. I could go to a peeler bar and spend $5 a beer waiting an hour to see a low class dancer and end up spending 15 bucks to see some skin in the end. Whoohoo, never seen that before. Or go see a damn movie.

I don't get the negativity. It's entertainment. Sheeesh. I don't even care if it has a damn story or whatever. I just want to be entertained for a damn hour and a half for my damn 15 bucks. That simple. :)

After that I don't care what they do with it. Reasonable right?
