P2 to PC HELP

I need to know what exactly i need to transfer p2 files directly to PC and then edit them from there. I really need to do this because i'm starting a project. Thanks.

You can transfer the files from the camera through usb 2.0
to a standalone hard disk using firewire
also, you can put the p2 card in a pcmcia reader, or with a portable computer.
After that... you can edit with avid or canopus, or using the raylight software, with vegas, premiere...

By far, the fastest way to transfer to a PC is using this adapter:

If USB or FW is your only option, using the Camera, as mentioned, or the P2 Store as a bridge works well. This all depends on your work flow.

I know that our PCI-CardBus product does not work on the MAC. The P2 Store will mount a card as a drive on a PC, and SHOULD on a MAC as well. I'll have to ask our engineering dept. or maybe someone has tried it here?

Thank you very much david... i will order this weekend. Also, is raylight really the cheapest way to read p2 files? Good grief... you think someone would come out with a better way for a lot less. I'll be paying 200 for merely seeing my footage! >:/

And you won't be viewing in real time unless you pick the lowest quality which makes the video all blocky, but real time.

Medium quality and high quality, forget about it. Video looks good, but at 10fps...

One of the main drawbacks of that solution is that you need to insert the p2 card into the pci slot on the BACK of your computer. A front-loading solution would be much better. But, I guess everyone's computer setup is different.

I agree, it can be very inconvenient. We've discussed this problem before. This is the only way to do this inexpensively. There is no way to extend it inexpensively, (sub 1K). The next best option is the P2 Store, if the speed is acceptable (USB2).

Yes, but impossible.

That's the problem. They can only make these with extraordinarily short cable lengths or they don't work.

You can't make a cable long enough to reach the front of the computer.

The reason they're ubiquitous on laptops is because the cable length can be just a couple of inches for the average laptop. And they're extinct on desktops because the longest cable you can make only lets you reach to the back of the computer, and nobody wants it there.

And that's why Panasonic's five-bay reader is so expensive: it's got to be some manner of combination of PCMCIA slots plus a motherboard plus a processor plus a USB connection in order to get it all to work out of a USB2 port.

Probably not so different in that the "butt end" of a pci card is usually at the back of the computer. I'll bet they could make a modification for an external setup or have it come out the front of a vacant bay (assumes you have one). But who would want to pay the couple hundred additional bucks for all that when you can just bend over for $79.00 no?

edit: opps, I guess I should have read page 2 before posting . . . DO-AH!! (sorry guys).

Yeah, I haven't seen any data on here about "real world" transfer speeds (except for what Panasonic claims). I should be recieving my HVX200 and P2 Store in the mail tommorow. I am going to actually see what the exact transfer times are when copying to the P2 Store and the time it takes to transfer my P2 store to my computer through USB 2.0. Also, I am going to see what the exact transfer times are when copying P2 cards to my laptop via the PCMCIA slot. I'll post the results.

We have done a number of controlled tests. Using a Windows XP PC (2.53GHz 512MB ram and a 7200RPM HDD) these are the best figures we got using Windows Explorer to do a simple copy of a full 4GB P2 card with multiple clips on it.

P2 Store transfer to the internal HDD (verify on)-----6:10
P2 Store USB copy to the PC of 1 partition------------5:20
P2 Store USB copy of P2 card to the PC----------------3:47
SCPCI-P2-----------------------------------------------------1:51
Keep in mind that there are a lot of variables, especially with USB.

Hope this helps.
