P2 store drive is transferring super slow.

I have been having problems with the P2 store. Anyone know why my 8 gig cards are taking 45 minutes to an hour to download?

Flo: I created a file on the desktop and then double click on the no name file(P2 store). I then drag and drop the contents and text file into my file on the desktop.

I checked the cable and turned the P2 store on and off. I had one transfer go through normally in 8 minutes and nothing changed. I did 6 other transfers and they took approx 45 minutes.

I had a Maxtor drive plugged into one USB 2 and the P2 store in the other on a MacBook Pro (2 gigs of Ram) 15" 80 gig harddrive. FCP was running at the same time. Internet was not connected.

Help! I have a job Thursday and I cannot wait 45 min for and 8 gig card to download.

part (but not all) of your problem is you are using USB from p2 store AND USB drive. USB is slow (despite theoretical 480mbs) and using two devices that are USB makes it slower. If your external drive were firewire, you would have a faster drive to begin with and the USB hub wouldn't be working so hard. You still will be bottlenecked by USB on p2 store which I have found runs around 140mbs in real life which comes to about 8-10 min for an 8 gig partition.

When speed is your number one concern....

1) Turn off verify on the P2 store, that will shorten the transfer by a third (Although theoretically, your files will not be verifed of content transfer, I never had a problem with that as long as you do not move the P2 store during transfer, if you do move it, then it will not transfer the whole file. When in doubt, retransfer the file.)

2) When dragging and dropping or cutting and pasting, transfer the text file first.

3) Use only firewire drives for storage..it's faster and does not "share" the usb bus.

4) Use P2 Genie, so you are not sitting there wasting time transfering files that can be automatically transfered for you.

What do you mean you created a file? Do you mean folder? Or are you creating an actual file of some kind? The latter could cause problems. Or is this some kind of Mac Jibber Jabber?

Sorry. I created a folder for the file. I did an experiment last night and just transferred the contents folder w/o the text file. The file transferred at the normal 8 minute range. It then took a half second to transfer the text file. Not sure what's going on, but I shouldn't need a work around for this. It should just work. Where do I get the P2 genie? I bought the P2 log from Imagine and it seems to work well.

I was having the same problem. I had a full P2 Store which was going to take 7 hours to download to a drive. The day before however it only took about 40 minutes to dump to a drive. I purchased P2 Genie and all is well. I did however find bug in the P2 Genie which Anders, the creator of the program, had a quick fix for.
I was in a panic. I only had four hours before I had to hop onto a train for the next location. My P2 Store download was going to take 7 hours using the same method you described. When it came time to leave (at 5am) for the train I noticed that not only was the data only half way minuets, but it had completely stopped. Like I said, only the day before did it take 40 minutes to dump a full P2 Store with the same cable, same drive, same computer.
When I got to my next location (did a move from Poland to the Ukraine) I downloaded P2 Genie and did the dump from the P2 Store to an external firewire drive. With P2 Genie it took about 40 minutes for the entire 60Gig copy. Thanks Anders.
